Sophomore Jeremy Langer hasn't yet been forced into a leadership role for the IU Men's Tennis team.

Senior Lachlan Ferguson has been through it all on the tennis court and he has been the unquestioned leader of the Hoosiers for the last several years.

Ferguson is also the Hoosiers' top player, so he always competes against the best players from the opposing team(s).

But with Ferguson (undisclosed illness) and junior Santiago Gruter (Pneumonia) out for the UNLV Invitational this weekend, Langer had to fill the leadership vacancy.

He responded very well.

Langer went 2-1 in singles play on the weekend, defeating No. 81 Andrew Carter of Louisville in the process. Langer also won two of his three doubles matches in the tournament.

IU coach Randy Bloemendaal was thrilled with Langer's performance.

"Jeremy did a great job," Bloemendaal said. "He was playing a lot of the other teams' best players all weekend and he performed really well."

The Hoosiers fared well considering the circumstances....but they will welcome back the production and leadership that both Ferguson and Gruter provide.
