Recruiting: Hate it or love it?

There isn't a lot of focus on college basketball during the month of July, but if there is any news, it usually involves recruiting. And with no game reports to read, a couple of recruiting stories caught my eye this morning (okay, it's 1:30 PM). First, ESPN.com's Pat Forde wrote a great article on how college coach's recruiting targets are getting younger and younger.

Back on the air...

It's been nearly four months since this has been updated and we here at the Indiana Daily Student have noticed that the blog was receiving a lot of traffic.

Nittany Lions take series opener 6-4

The Hoosiers dropped their ninth straight game Friday as they hosted Penn State at Sembower. The Nittany Lions won the series opener 6-4. IU designated hitter Jon Fixler got the Hoosiers on the board in the first with a two RBI single up the middle.

Cutters win

In a sprint to the finish, the Cutters earned their eighth all-time championship. Cutters junior Alex Bishop beat out riders from Phi Kappa Psi, Dodds House, Black Key Bulls and Team Major Taylor to take the checkered flag. Those five teams stayed in a pack for the majority of the second half of the race, setting up the final sprint.

First game goes to Buckeyes

In the first game of Friday's four-game set with Ohio State, the Buckeyes came out on top 6-4. OSU struck first, scoring a run in the third. The Hoosiers took the 2-0 lead with RBI singles from senior shortstop Keith Haas and freshman left fielder Brian Lambert.

Women's Race

Just got back from the track after a great day of racing. Kappa Delta won the women's race with ease after sneaking away from the pack with about 30 laps to go. Teter out-sprinted Kappa Alpha Theta for second place.

Race Day

It came awfully quickly, didn't it? Looks like perfect conditions for the women's race -- high '60s, sunny skies.

Hoosiers fall in 10 innings to ISU

Well, the weather was really nice, but that may have been the bright spot for the Hoosiers and their fans today. IU fell 9-7 to Indiana State today over at Sembower in ten innings.

Who are your race favorites?

So, it's officially Little 500 week, and before three-fourths of campus becomes inebriated, we wanted to know who you think will win the Little 500. Can Kappa Alpha Theta build on a strong spring showing?

Hoosiers drop first game with PU

Friday at West Lafayette, IU coach Tracy Smith got some of that power he's been looking for in recent weeks, but it wasn't enough as his Hoosiers fell 4-2 to Purdue. Sophomore right fielder Chris Hervey hit his first career home run, just IU's second dinger of the year, in the third inning to deep left to give them the 1-0 lead. But as soon as the Hoosiers scored, the Boilermakers responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Knotted up at one, sophomore second baseman Evan Crawford hit an RBI single to left that brought Hervey home in the fifth, IU 2-1. But it wasn't to be for the Hoosiers as Purdue scored two more runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh, claiming the 4-2 win. The loss dropped IU to 13-15 overall and 3-6 in conference.

Early forecast

So The Weather Channel is predicting sunny and (relatively) warm days for both the men's and women's races.

Means will travel to Purdue for weekend series

In case you didn't know, or you're so busy laughing about the Big Purple Pimp you can't focus, the IU baseball team has a pretty big series this weekend. The Hoosiers travel to arch-rival Purdue to open a four-game set Friday.

What is a Purple Ace? The IDS tells all

Thanks to a quick Wikipedia search, I found an entry about Evansville's mascot, the Purple Ace. Here's what I found. The story goes back to the 1920s when Evansville was actually the Pioneers, not the Aces.

Practice Update

Everyone, especially Mike and I, are excited that there are less than two weeks remaining until race day (10 for the women's and 11 for the men's to be exact). Things went smoothly today as the riders did a practice start.
