RPS plans reduction in workforce

Residential Programs and Services announced Thursday it will have to cut seven residence hall custodians and restructure some supervisory positions in the dorms. The announcement concerned many custodians who work in residence halls. "My husband just had bone cancer, and he had to terminate his job," said Sharon Robertson, a custodian who has been working in McNutt Quad for a year and a half and for the University since 1996. "If I lose my job, I don't know what will happen."

Hoosiers' momentum sputters in loss

Two days after knocking off No. 1 Michigan State, the Hoosiers lost to unranked Michigan 70-64. Freshman forward Jared Jeffries scored 15 points to lead the Hoosiers. Junior forward Kirk Haston added 13 while freshman guard Andre Owens scored 10.

Classes have started, books haven't been bought and Monday Night Raw starts an hour later -- because of time zones -- than the time I became accustomed to during break. Fife not welcome on Michigan turf

With four seconds remaining on the game clock against Michigan Tuesday night, Tom Coverdale passed the ball outside to Kirk Haston. It was the same play IU used in Sunday's game against Michigan State. Haston took a look at the basket and shot the ball -- but this time, it bounced around the rim a few times before falling to the floor. The shot was no good.

Homosexuals targeted by dorm graffiti

Residents of Collins Center awoke to find their building spray-painted with speckled blue and red hues of hate Sunday. The messages were targeted at homosexuals. Lt. Jerry Minger of the IU Police Department said the graffiti occurred sometime between 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.

$105 million will fund research

IU received a $105 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. Dec. 14 to fund the School of Medicine's Indiana Genomics Initiative (INGEN). The grant is the single largest awarded in the endowment's history.

National, local stores hurt by slow sales

With whispers of a recession on the horizon, the usual holiday spending rush lagged dramatically this year. The decline affected everyone from the large chain department stores to the small independent businesses. "A lot of stores are going to have to rethink their strategies to adjust to a slower pace," said Michael Niemera, vice president of Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Ltd.

County Council focuses on budget

The first 2001 meeting of the Monroe County Council Tuesday centered around the appropriation of additional items to the budget and the election of new officers. Convening at the Monroe County Courthouse, the hot item of the evening was the county parks and recreation department's request for a $140,000 Hometown Indiana Grant. The state awarded the grant to develop the new Flatwoods County Park west of Ellettsville.

The highest goal of any journalist is to fairly and accurately report the events and opinions of his or her community. Student journalist Capri Coffer was working toward this objective at Kentucky State University in 1993, publishing KSU's student yearbook.
