Hoosiers travel to North Carolina for tournament

The IU women's golf team spent spring break in Florida, competing every day in the hospitable southern weather. They returned to Bloomington only to find frigid temperatures, a steady flow of rain and not much practice time. The opportunity to play at the Lady Seahawk Invitational in Wallace, N.C. today and tomorrow has the team excited to take the course.

Students sound off on Bursar bill on new Web site

With the click of a mouse, students can now express feedback regarding the mandatory activity and service fees that appear on their Bursar bills. The Office of the Dean of Students recently constructed a Web site allowing students to view prospective fee changes and submit their views via e-mail to the Committee for Fee Review. The site is available at campuslife.indiana.edu/feereview. Six student voting members are on the committee, which supervises mandatory fee levels and analyzes proposals by the organizations that charge them. Each year, the committee recommends various changes to what appears on students' Bursar bills. These commentaries are available on the committee's Web site.

Hoosiers snap big ten drought

Jarrad Odle started his speech like most seniors do on Senior Day at Assembly Hall Saturday, after the Hoosiers clinched a share of the Big Ten regular season title by beating Northwestern 79-67. He had the microphone and thanked his family, teammates, coaches and fans. But Odle kept going, thanking what seemed like everybody he knows, including his academic advisors and his hair stylist. In an emotional speech after Odle's, Dane Fife, the Hoosiers' only other senior, let the home crowd know that all the Big Ten fans who have told him his brother Dugan was better than Fife were wrong.

Walda to head association

Former president of the IU Board of Trustees and current executive director of IU's federal relations, John Walda, has been named to head the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB).

Anthrax letter reaches Congress

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle tested positive for anthrax on Monday as the bioterrorism scare rattling the nation reached the halls of Congress. The discovery of anthrax in Washington followed earlier instances in Florida, New York and Nevada in which at least 12 people were exposed to spores of the potentially deadly bacteria.

Hoosiers Outrun Cancer to inform public

An estimated 4,000 participants will race for a cure Oct. 20, in the second annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5K run/walk. But this year, Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is about much more than the walk itself.

ATLANTA -- Junior Jeff Newton's right shoulder and bicep is emblazoned with artwork that is surrounded by the phrase "Refuse Limitations." Newton lived up to the tattoo Saturday night, scoring a career-high 19 points to lead the Hoosiers past Oklahoma in the national semifinals.

IUSA Supreme Court to hear Steel appeal

An appeal to Wednesday's decision by the IU Student Association Election Commission concerning violations to the elections code by the Kirkwood ticket has been filed by the Steel ticket, delaying election results once again. Steel claims that the commission was "erroneous in its interpretation of the elections code of the IUSA." Joe Walterman, IUSA elections commissioner, supported the election commission's decision.

Taliban same as 'Religious Right?'

Democrats appear to be considering a provocative campaign theme for 2002. They might be gearing up to depict the Religious Right -- more generally, the right end of the Republican party -- as an American equivalent to the Taliban. A vote for the Democrats, then, would be a vote for tolerance and freedom of religion, conscience and choice. That's the plan, at least.

A plea for wisdom, not lectures

In four years at IU, I've never had a 4.0 GPA. Not that I couldn't; I've chosen not to. My parents consistently wonder why I don't strive for higher grades and why my GPA is never as good as they know and I know it could be. My brother, with grade weighting, will have better than a 5.0 GPA when he graduates high school in the spring. I'll be lucky to have a 3.4 GPA for my four years here.
