The Corvette might just work

In politics, nothing draws more attention than a scandal. And, boy, does the IU Student Association have a scandal on its hands. Buying a $40,000, $50,000, or $60,000 car (the numbers have been all over the place) to give away to voters and then finding out that, well, they can't go through with their plan, sounds incredibly scandalous.

IUPD is taking it too far

Last Thursday night a student awoke to an IU Police Department officer in his face. The 19-year-old shot out of bed and observed the shadow of an officer in his doorway. The delirious student cooperated and admitted he'd been drinking. He was honest about his age. The officer shoved a portable breath test in his face and in the privacy of his own room he received an illegal consumption ticket. Eleven others received tickets that night.

'Vote Hard' not about votes

If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck you would think it would be a duck, right? So with the IU Student Association's "Vote Hard" campaign, if it sounds like a voting campaign and looks like a voting campaign it's safe to say that it is a voting campaign, correct? So why is IUSA getting so much media attention focused around its $50,000 plus Corvette rather than its flyers given to students encouraging them to vote?

IU coach admits to alcohol problems

More details were released Wednesday in the Bloomington Police Department's Monday morning arrest of recently hired IU men's assistant tennis coach Mark Keil. Keil was charged with residential entry by the BPD early Monday after entering two neighboring residences at the Dunn Hill apartment complex on East 17th St. at 12:47 a.m. He was intoxicated at the time of the incident.

Two die in rural Indiana plane crash

LEBANON, Ind. -- Two people died when their small plane crashed in a Boone County field Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. The Boone County Sheriff's Department identified the victims as 56-year-old George Mitten of Indianapolis and 48-year-old Robert Faith of Fortville. Mitten was piloting the single-engine plane that crashed in a field near the Boone County/Hamilton County line shortly after taking off from Terry Airport, authorities said.

Alcohol arrests double

The 217 citations issued for illegal consumption by the IU Police Department this month more than double last September's total of 94. And the month isn't even over. University officials say the spike in citations is not a cause for concern. Some students say it is; they say IU's party school ranking has made them targets of local police. Sgt. Tim Lewis said there has been no change of policy at IUPD. "The only thing the numbers tell me is that we are running into more people breaking the law," he said.

Greeks feel singled out by alcohol tactics

For two years, University-hired party patrolman Scott Thiery roamed greek row in search of alcohol violations. And in those two years, there was no significant decrease in alcohol use and abuse, Dean of Students Richard McKaig said. "We thought it was money being poorly spent," he said.

Skull found near home of missing girl

STONEVILLE, N.C. -- Authorities and search dogs descended on a rural area where a small human skull was found Wednesday, some 30 miles from where a 9-year-old Virginia girl disappeared last month. The officials included a contingent from Henry County, Va., where police have been hunting for Jennifer Short since Aug. 15. Officials believe the girl was kidnapped after her parents were slain in their Henry County home. The skull "appears to be from somebody young," said Jeannie Justice, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Office in Rockingham County.

West side bank robbed, police tracking suspect

A man entered Union Planters Bank, 476 S. Liberty Dr., and took an undisclosed amount of money Wednesday afternoon, police said. Walking in at 2:20 p.m., the unidentified man passed a note to a teller saying he was robbing the bank, Bloomington Police Department Sergeant Bill Parker said. Asking for small bills, the thief took the money from the teller.

U.S. women's basketball team defeats Russia

NANJING, China -- The U.S. women's basketball team wasn't about to make the same mistake as the men. The United States beat Russia 79-74 on Wednesday for its second straight Women's World Basketball Championship. The title came just weeks after the U.S. men's team finished an embarrassing sixth in the World Championship in Indianapolis. "I think we have redeemed them. But we have all learned a big lesson from the men," tournament MVP Lisa Leslie said. "We just can't get complacent."

Vikes question Moss' maturity

Course renovation allows golf tournament's return

This weekend, the men's golf team will play host to its first tournament event since the 1996 women's Big Ten Golf Championship and its first men's event since the 1993 men's Big Ten Championship. The IU Golf Course began construction in 1954 and was completed in 1957. The course has had only two major constructions done since.

Irsay needs to support fans, not alienate them

Owning a company is a difficult thing to do. There are so many facets that go into running an organization well that it is a wonder how CEOs of these businesses do not lose their heads due to the high stress. Take Jim Irsay, for example. The owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts has had it real tough. The man is the real life version of the American success story. He started out with an idea, stuck with it through the hard times, and eventually, he managed to break through the blood and sweat.

Oh, how I hate Ohio State

Mary had a little lamb was not my first nursery rhyme. In fact, while my little playmates were singing about lambs and falling bridges, I was singing, Oh, how I hate Ohio State. Now, my parents didn't encourage, or condone, hatred of any kind. But my mom was, and is, a rabid Michigan fan, and for anyone that doesn't know, to a true Wolverine, the Buckeyes are the anti-Christ.

Hoosiers win conference opener

The IU volleyball team entered its second match of three straight ranked opponents Wednesday night. This seemed to be quite the daunting task until IU's first opponent, Louisville, ranked 30th in the country, were defeated by the Hoosiers 3-1. Luckily, the streak rolls on as the team reaches its sixth win in a row and second against a ranked team as IU beat 11th-ranked Ohio State 3-1.

Rumsfeld asks Germany to mend divide

WARSAW, Poland -- Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld suggested Wednesday that it was up to Germany to repair damage to American-German relations. "We do have a saying in America: If you're in a hole, stop digging," Rumsfeld told a news conference at the close of two days of NATO meetings clouded by tensions between the two allies.

IUSA meets with BPD about alcohol arrests

Representatives from both the IU Student Association and the Bloomington Police Department met Wednesday to discuss the issues raised by IUSA in a letter they mailed to BPD in early September. Judd Arnold, IUSA vice president of administration, said the meeting improved relations between IUSA and BPD, and hoped the two organizations would work together to better inform students about the expectations of the BPD and the city of Bloomington regarding public intoxication.

Racial awareness group wants answers

When two white men walked through the IU Main Library wearing Afro wigs and painted black faces, on the morning of Aug. 23, 2002, they passed junior Nicole Watkins. Watkins at first tried to ignore them, but began to shake after she sat down. After searching for the men, she decided to contact the Dean of Students' office, but felt the staff was uncooperative. "This is a white school, and it was an African-American incident," Watkins said.

Nobel winner gives lecture

Former Costa Rican President and 1987 Nobel Peace Prize winner Oscar Arias, clothed in a simple, navy suit and a quiet spirit of humility, walked to the podium Wednesday night and began his speech before the standing-room only Ballantine Hall crowd not with a powerful quote or suspense-inducing tale, but by thanking the audience for having him. It was Arias' second of two Patten lectures in a series at IU. His speech was entitled "Moral Leadership in the New Century."
