IU coach admits to alcohol problems

More details were released Wednesday in the Bloomington Police Department's Monday morning arrest of recently hired IU men's assistant tennis coach Mark Keil. \nKeil was charged with residential entry by the BPD early Monday after entering two neighboring residences at the Dunn Hill apartment complex on East 17th St. at 12:47 a.m. He was intoxicated at the time of the incident.\nIn an interview with the IDS Wednesday, Keil revealed that he has had a history of problems with alcohol abuse.\n"I have a substance abuse problem and I'm going to be taking care of that," Keil said. "My decisions have not been very good for my career or for my family life. As far as my neighbor's case, I was intoxicated. I will seek rehabilitation."\nAfter being hired as men's assistant tennis coach Aug. 5 by the IU athletic department, Keil was arrested 13 days later for public intoxication near the intersection of 10th and Forest streets by the IU Police Department. He also said that he has been previously arrested for driving under the influence.\nKeil is awaiting the results of a chemical dependency test he took Tuesday that he said will shed light on the scope of his problem.\n"Hopefully that will coincide with me not losing my job. It's been a process that's been haunting me since I've retired from the pro tour," said the 35-year-old Keil, who played his last professional ATP Tour singles match in 1994.\n"I've had a DUI before, public intoxication and now this, all due to alcohol," said Keil, who notched a singles victory against Pete Sampras during his tennis career. "I was a heavy partier when I was playing, but it's just been escalating. When you do it on the tour, you get away with a lot more things than in civilian life. Now, I need to take care of things a little bit more."\nKeil is currently under suspension from the team while the case is being reviewed, he said.\nThe police report of Monday's arrest provided the following account:\nThe incident began when Keil knocked on the door of a nearby apartment in the 400 block of the Dunn Hill apartment complex. \nTwo 19-year-old female residents, whose names were not released by the BPD, were expecting another visitor and therefore shouted for Keil to come in. He did so.\nUpon entering, Keil laid down on the floor and pulled out what appeared to be a pair of boxers and saying that he wanted to take his pants off and go for a swim.\nHe then began rubbing a chair, apparently in an attempt to touch one of the females.\nKeil then asked if the females had any beer, and they responded that they didn't. He then proceeded to check the refrigerator himself and found no alcohol.\nHe again asked if the females wanted to join him for a swim and they again said no. At that point, Keil left the apartment.\nThe females locked the door and, later in the evening, Keil again knocked trying to get back in. \nThey denied him entry, and thereafter the visitor they were expecting before, sophomore Darcy Schoening, finally showed up. She was let into the apartment and then the door was again locked.\nWith now three females in the apartment, Keil again came knocking, and again was denied entry.\nSchoening, who lived in an apartment near the other two females, told police that she also had an encounter with Keil earlier in the evening.\nApparently, after initially leaving the two females' apartment, Keil headed to Schoening's apartment after he saw her talking on the phone, Schoening said.\nHe then entered her apartment through unlocked sliding doors and sat down on a couch in just his boxers. Schoening then began talking in an obviously louder fashion in an effort to let Keil know that she was definitely on the phone.\nAt that point, Keil then exited her apartment through the same sliding doors he had entered through.\nAfter his failed attempts to get back into the original apartment he entered, Keil then went back to his own apartment.\nIt was there where he was arrested nude, holding what appeared to be boxers in his hand.\nKeil claims that the students whose apartment he entered were afraid of him solely because he was intoxicated and that they knew him prior to the incident.\nAssistant athletics director Jeff Fanter said Tuesday, the department is investigating the incident.
