·

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Police hunting the serial sniper issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for a 42-year-old man they believe has information about the string of terrifying shootings that have left 10 people dead in the Washington suburbs. Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said the man, John Allen Muhammad, should be considered "armed and dangerous" and that he was being sought on a federal weapons charge.

Mom, we're on TV

·

These days, you can find anything on TV. Starting Friday, that includes the Indiana Daily Student. Today, the IDS launches a partnership with WTIU News Forum, a Friday evening student-run news show. As partners, we'll be sharing ideas and resources. You can already see the results on today's Page One, where Bennett Haeberle's video-capture packages the IDS' coverage on an adult video filmed on campus. Haeberle, who is also an IDS campus editor, will report more on IU's newest controversy on Friday's show.

Guns involve feelings of safety

·

Another disturbing broadcast. The gunman's record is chilling: 10 dead, three wounded. Tuesday brought the fate of the sniper's latest victim, a bus driver. Oct. 2 heralded the beginning of a three-week cold and calculated execution rampage of a lone sharp shooter on the prowl in the Washington area these past three weeks. This lone sniper has managed to unsettle America with his shooting spree solo. And he has managed to unsettle me as well. Following the chilling events in Washington, the news these days has made me distrustful with regards to gun ownership and legislation. How should one feel about the gun legislation in this country?

America's gun show

·

Something my friend Ben told me online shocked me. I thought that I had seen everything that there could be seen, and that anything relating to the sniper case out in Washington D.C. could startle me. After all, I feel I'm somewhat of a jaded news watcher like most of you, and I do put my trust that nothing horrendously stupid is going to be said.

Armed Chechens take Moscow theater hostage

·

MOSCOW -- At least 40 armed Chechen rebels stormed a crowded theater and took hundreds of people hostage in the midst of a musical, threatening early Thursday to shoot their captives and blow up the building if Russian security forces attacked. Several hours after the rebels rushed the theater, firing automatic weapons, they began communicating with Russian officials by cell phone. The hostage-takers demanded that Russia end the war in Chechnya, a southern region where the army is fighting Islamic separatists.

Educator speaks out against racism

·

Jane Elliott, a leading race educator, doesn't allow racism. Elliott spoke with students Wednesday at Alumni Hall in the Indiana Memorial Union to discuss issues of racism. Elliott interacted frequently with the crowd to prove her point, and even asked two students to stand on the stage. After she and the student volunteers conducted a question-answer series to determine what and which race, gender, age and height are perceived to be more privileged, the audience agreed young, tall, white males have the most power.

UITS limits access

·

Until recently anyone connected to the Internet could access IU students' phone numbers and e-mail. That, however, has been temporally halted. Because of the aging machines hosting the student query system, officials in the University Information Technology Services office have limited accesses to the service to only on-campus computers.

Tip, but what for?

·

I learned several things coming to this country and one of my quickest lessons related to tipping. In many countries, it is customary for patrons to leave monetary gratuities, but in America, tipping seems to have reached plague proportions.

Information should be free

Many aspects of American life have changed in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks of 2001. Security is tighter at the nation's air and seaports, patriotism is at an all-time high, and the U.S. military is hoping to assert its dominance in the Middle East once again.

Post-season not just a fantasy land

·

I hope the IU football team has healed. Poor guys, they had to walk around campus with huge gaping holes in their feet as a result of shooting themselves multiple times in the foot in the loss to Iowa.

Laid-back approach working

·

There are two philosophies to coaching. A coaching staff can be stern disciplinarians, barking instructions from the sideline. Or, they can be laid back and teach through hands-on examples, a laid-back attitude and humor. Credit coach Mick Lyon and his staff with the latter.

Poetry slam attracts large audience, showcases students' creativity

·

On Friday, Oct. 18, the Union held an "Around the World" event, hosting activities from different countries. Then, five people who are selected from the audience judge you. The highest scores and the lowest scores are cut from moving on to the next round. The average of the scores are allowed to move on to the next round," said Jessica Williams-Gibson, director of the Fine Arts Committee.

Halloween Fun

·

Princesses, witches, ninjas and ghosts decorate the streets annually one night a year, when kids have a reason to stay up late and consume massive amounts of candy. As the years progress, so do children's costumes, until middle school or high school when they are "too old" to go trick-or-treating. However, you're never too old to go trick-or-treating and celebrate Halloween, a perennial favorite among IU students.

Goalie does double duty

·

Most IU athletics fans are aware that senior quarterback Gibran Hamdan is a two-sport star, but not many realize that the soccer team has a two-sport athlete of its own who has experienced even more success.
