The Bloomington Police Department is seeking help identifying a person of interest in a Sunday morning shooting on Kirkwood Avenue, according to a Thursday news release from Capt. Ryan Pedigo.

The person of interest is male and was seen wearing a backpack that resembles a shark or dolphin along with a necklace, Pedigo wrote.

When asked if the male is a suspect, Pedigo referred the Indiana Daily Student to his original release describing him as a person of interest.

At approximately 12:25 a.m. Sunday, BPD officers heard what “they believed to be multiple gunshots,” while they were stationed at the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue monitoring a large crowd gathered in the street, according to a Sunday release.

A person of interest in an April 26, 2026, shooting is seen on Kirkwood Avenue. Five people were injured by gunfire in the shooting.

Investigators reviewed video and cell phone footage and believe the incident followed a fight between two females near Five Guys. During the fight, multiple individuals drew handguns, and it is believed two sperate individuals then fired their weapons.

Five victims were injured by gunfire, and four others sustained injuries like cuts and scrapes as they attempted to run from the scene.

IU Associate Vice President and Superintendent for Public Safety Benjamin Hunter said none of them are believed to be IU students during a city news conference Sunday.

Out of the five, one suffered a bullet wound and injuries from bullet fragments. The four others were injured by bullet fragments. All five have been released from the hospital and are in stable condition, with four confirmed from the Sunday release.

The mother of the fifth victim who sustained the bullet wound confirmed she was released Tuesday in a message to the Indiana Daily Student.

Anyone with information about the person of interest or shooting is asked to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477 or scottc@bloomington.in.gov.
