The frigid psychology of Low

·

It was a surreal experience, interviewing the band Low as the musicians ate burritos at a restaurant on Kirkwood on homecoming eve. Singer-guitarist Alan Sparhawk explained to me how he thought they should open a burrito shop in their hometown -- apparently the town was lacking. I had sought the band out to clear up a few questions I had. It turns out that they were as enigmatic and normal as I could have hoped.

Man the lifeboats and prepare to jump ship

·

Last year, I got sucked into watching "The Triangle," a dopey made-for-cable movie about a ghost ship. That one starred TV wash-ups Luke Perry and Dan Cortese. Then my brains turned to tapioca and I found myself watching "Lost Voyage," yet another made-for-cable movie about a ghost ship. That little masterpiece starred TV wash-ups Judd Nelson and Janet Gunn. Both movies were tedious and meandering, but hey, I was the numbnuts who watched them. Both of them. Now, more than a year later, I was faced with another movie about a ghost ship, this one creatively titled "Ghost Ship" and starring TV wash-up Julianna Margulies. The only difference between this theatrical release and those two boob-tube classics is several choice four-letter words and a whole lot of gore. By the bucketful.

Nolan's latest might keep you awake at night

·

Cristopher Nolan followed up his indie film sensation, "Memento," with "Insomnia," an English-language remake of Erik Skjoldbjærg's widely acclaimed Norwegian thriller of the same title. The film was met with glowing reviews and moderate box-office success, but it didn't seem to garner the universal acceptance that many had anticipated. Those of you who missed "Insomnia" when it hit theaters this past May would be well advised to seek out the recently released DVD.

Seniors shine in final game

·

The women's soccer team recognized its six seniors at Armstrong Stadium last night with the 10th annual Senior Night. After the pre-game festivities, IU went out and battled its in-state rival, the Butler Bulldogs. Butler, from the Horizon Conference, came to Bloomington with a 12-4 record, and looked to spoil Senior Night. A pair of seniors wouldn't allow that. After dominating Butler in most statistical categories for 85 minutes and spoiling numerous chances, IU (10-6-2, 4-4-2 Big Ten) finally scored a goal for a 1-0 win. It was scored by senior forward Jenny Mann, who was assisted by fellow senior forward Kate Kastl. The win improved IU to 4-5-1 all time against the Bulldogs. The goal gave the Hoosiers a win in their final regular season game before the Big Ten tournament, which begins in East Lansing, Mich. next Thursday.

'Tales' from the campus

·

A legend holds that two female students stayed in McNutt Quad during Christmas Break years ago -- when the campus was virtually desolate. Late one night the women heard reports on the radio about a hatchet man on campus. One of the roommates decided to get food downstairs and promised to return shortly. Five minutes, fifteen, an hour -- and still no sign of her.

'Freestyle' it with new 'NBA Live 2003'

·

Kobe Bryant is unstoppable. With a series of spin moves, sidesteps, crossovers and jukes, he slips between three defenders and throws down a thunderous one-handed windmill dunk. No, it's not the NBA playoffs. It's "NBA Live 2003," the latest pro basketball game from EA Sports. The game isn't radically different from EA Sports' 2002 version. The graphics and sound -- which were fantastic last year -- aren't noticeably different or better, and the usual features are included: create-a-player, franchise mode and online play, to name a few.

"E.T." is a classic family film by director Steven Spielberg, a story of an alien, left on this planet by his ship, and a boy, Elliott. To celebrate "E.T.'s" 20th anniversary, Spielberg reworked about 50 of his favorite scenes and re-released the movie into theaters. Now, both the original and the "touched up" versions are out in a two-disc set, and both look and sound great.

A friendly trick or treat

·

October images fill the streets of Bloomington in preparation of one "spooky" event -- Halloween. Brown, orange and yellow leaves lie helplessly in the road, while scarecrows and paper witches crowd the windows of neighbors down the street. A mixture of children and college students run from door to door, dressed in costume and fighting for every last bit of candy in town.
