Incumbent party vows to reform on-campus drinking policies, institute dollar cabs for responsible students

Q: What is your ticket's position on the University-imposed ban on smoking within 30 feet of University buildings? A: We support the smoking ordinance, but the University needs to provide ash trays and shelters in places where people can smoke. This ordinance should protect non-smokers, not shame smokers to the curb.

Q: What is your ticket's position on the University-imposed ban on smoking within 30 feet of University buildings? A: Students shouldn't be forcefully subjected to secondhand smoke, but smokers have rights and pay tuition, as well. In residence halls, the ban only encourages the hazards that come with smoking in rooms. In classroom buildings, certain entrances should be designated non-smoking.

Jumper looks to break own school records

IU senior Lauren Chesnut began her collegiate jumping career at George Mason University in Virginia and transferred to IU after her sophomore season. Chesnut made her mark in the Big Ten immediately as she set the IU school record in the triple jump with a leap of 13.02 meters.

Kline has surgery on right knee

IU sophomore forward Sean Kline underwent knee surgery Monday to repair the damage he suffered Feb. 14 at Purdue. The Huntington, Ind., native averaged 7.1 points per game and four rebounds in 22 games of action. It was announced Feb. 16 Kline would miss the rest of the season due to the knee injury and the required surgery.

Hoosiers look to rebound

Coming off a tough three-game road trip where the Hoosiers dropped three games to Southeastern Louisiana, the IU baseball team will make its home debut Tuesday against the DePauw Tigers. With the weather not cooperating lately, the team has had to practice inside during the entire preseason.

No seniors, no problem for IU

Traditionally most teams' source of leadership comes from those who have been through adversity and carry the most experience -- the seniors. But for the No. 53 Hoosiers, that is not an option, as the team is without any seniors for the 2003-2004 campaign. Last season the Hoosiers were able to rely upon then-seniors Zach Held and Peter Novotny who helped guide IU to a 12-11 record and a final ranking of No. 44 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association standings.

GOP may force gay marriage vote

INDIANAPOLIS -- House Republicans said Monday they would try a little-used procedure in hopes of forcing the full House to hear and perhaps vote on a proposal amending the Indiana Constitution to ban gay marriage.

Lost tape could clarify death

PORTLAND -- The father of a man killed during a chase last summer says he has evidence a police officer removed from his squad car a videotape that may contain footage of the fatal crash. Larry Hilbert said a company he hired to analyze a videotape taken from the second squad car to arrive at the scene of the crash that killed 20-year-old Brandon Hilbert concluded it shows an officer removing another videotape from his squad car.

McNutt family donates $2.12 million for COAS scholarships

A $2.12 million gift from the estate of Louise McNutt will fund between 10 and 15 annual full-tuition graduate fellowships for students studying the humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences. McNutt passed away in June 2000 and was the only child of the late Indiana Gov. Paul V. McNutt and his wife, Kathleen McNutt Watson.

Competitors welcome Tumbleweed restaurant

The first Tumbleweed Southwest Grill in Bloomington will celebrate its grand opening today. With its new location on the west side at 106 S. Franklin St., the restaurant specializes in mesquite steaks and ribs and other dishes with a distinct Southwest flavor. The restaurant and its employees have high expectations for its grand opening.

Piracy software ruled illegal

LOS ANGELES -- A federal judge ruled Friday a software program that copies DVDs illegally violates the copyrights of Hollywood studios. Judge Susan Illston ruled in San Francisco software made by Chesterfield, Mo.-based 321 Studios violates the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which prohibits the circumvention of anti-piracy measures such as the Content Scramble System protecting movies on DVDs.

Living in luxury

A wave of new luxury apartments is being developed in downtown Bloomington. Lofts on College and The Kirkwood are two new properties currently being leased, with plans to open in the fall of 2004. Jim Murphy, president of CFC Inc., the developing company responsible for The Kirkwood, said his company has experienced large demand and a very positive response to its heavy marketing campaign.

Pop quiz: you are dealt the ace and six of clubs versus your best friend's pocket queens. The flop is jack-six-four with two clubs -- who is the statistical favorite to win the hand? Across the country, poker is becoming the new golf. Nearly 48 percent of the 100 male students that I surveyed last week play poker at least once a month, making it almost as prevalent as alcohol on this campus. I personally play the game nearly every day and have an absolute blast doing so.

Pathetic Asian guys

I had all but given up on my dream of becoming famous. I thought there were no opportunities for Asian men with no martial arts talent, but then along came William Hung, the inept "American Idol" contestant, who unlike all the other rejects, has become a superstar and a phenomenon after his ungodly awful performance on the show.

Deflating 'diversity'

Diversity. Cool word, isn't it? In the fall, diversity permeates our collegiate landscape like the many colors of falling leaves. In springtime at IU, the word floats through the air like the sound of the bees dancing in tulip blooms, the sweet sound streaming into students' ears. This spring, the word can now be seen flying proudly on the campus street lights in banners proclaiming "1 for Diversity."
