First 'SlowFest' block party promotes locally prepared food

·

Slow Food Bloomington hosted SlowFest, an outdoor block party, to celebrate the local fall harvest yesterday, with several local restaurants serving foods with local flavor — literally. All the ingredients in foods present were grown by local farmers, and were the tastes of community traditions, organizers said.

IU professor defies logic at WonderLab

·

Laying down on a bed of 1,000 nails, John Maloy prepared to have a cinder block broken over his chest. The Monroe County Community School Corporation superintendent helped participate in the highlight event at WonderLab's "Science Night Out." During the experiment, IU physics professor Rick Van Kooten threw an apple at the bed of nails to demonstrate they were real.

College women face self-esteem issues

·

IU sorority women have reason to smile by simply looking at their reflection in the mirror. Los Angeles resident Juliet Funt, a motivational speaker for eight years, lectured sorority women on the issues of body image and self-esteem in a presentation titled "Buff Up Your Insides" Thursday evening at Assembly Hall. Funt's speech framed the self-esteem of women, or the lack thereof, as an urgent issue with lifetime consequences society must recognize.

Editorial crash and burn

·

In Friday's editorial, we unfairly pointed fingers at the Bloomington Faculty Council. Acting on bad information, we indicated that the BFC was in some way responsible for not funding a hardware upgrade which would have prevented the e-mail crash. This is not true, and we apologize.

Measuring up to Clinton

·

If you could have a couple drinks with any living American politician, who would it be? Without hesitation, I would pick Bill Clinton. I came to this conclusion after a waking dream about John Kerry. He was on a golf cart, giving his speech about the various socio-economic gaps currently afflicting American society. When he suddenly remarked about the state of things as "bullshit," I woke up, instantly realizing it was a dream because I know John Kerry does not possess the ability to be so candid, nor so emphatic.

The forgotten Americans

·

During Wednesday night's final presidential debate, both candidates fought in a last-ditch effort to win over the many undecided voters in America. But in an effort to win the undecided voters, they, like every other presidential candidate in past years, failed to reach out and touch another key group in America. I am not referring to the soccer moms or the NASCAR dads, but I am referring to the welfare moms and the dads who have to flip hamburgers.

·

The Silk Road Ensemble took its audience on a musical and cultural journey transcending many national and geographical borders on Saturday night. The group used the music and dance of Central Eurasian countries to show a broader image of a part of the world many people know little about.

Don't seize the day

·

A cliché wouldn't be a cliché if it didn't roll off the tongue with ease and make absolutely no literal sense. But one particular cliché cuts into my soul and makes me feel a distinct twinge of guilt every time I hear it. "Live each day as if it were your last." Let's stop and evaluate everything I did today. I went to class. I ate a sandwich. I did my Spanish homework. I checked my e-mail. And that was my last day to live? Oops.

Letters to the Editor

·

Livin' it up, Libertarian style As usual, this election, I'm glad to be neither a Republican nor a Democrat. If you believe that the faster U.S. soldiers hightail it out of Iraq, the better, for whom can you vote? Bush would continue his war, in its various, horrible forms. Kerry would send more troops to Iraq and perpetuate war as insidiously as Bush. Nader would internationalize it.

Court rules searching protesters unlawful

·

ATLANTA -- Fear of a terrorist attack is not sufficient enough reason for authorities to search people at a protest, a federal appeals court has ruled, saying 9-11 "cannot be the day liberty perished."

Chicago privatizes Skyway toll road

·

CHICAGO -- Chicago has reached a $1.8 billion deal to let a private consortium operate the Chicago Skyway toll road -- a trailblazing agreement the city said will save it money on maintenance and allow it to pay off millions of dollars in debt.

Electoral problems could make Colorado the next Florida

·

DENVER -- Colorado could end up writing an ugly sequel to the Florida election nightmare of four years ago. County clerks have been swamped with a surge in voter registrations, thousands of felons are on the voter rolls and there is widespread confusion about how provisional ballots will be counted and voting rules will be enforced.

Getting out the vote might be key for election victory

·

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With the televised debates behind them, President George W. Bush and Sen. John Kerry have little opportunity further to shape the presidential race except by waging an intense effort in the home stretch aimed at getting out the vote. Voters have a pretty good idea now what Bush and Kerry are all about. There isn't much room for either one to "define" his opponent or himself.

Pawning for fast cash

·

Walking into TomCats Pawn shop, located at 750 W. 17th St., almost feels like walking into a friend's house. Laughter and voices echo throughout the store, although you can't see anyone past the rows and rows of televisions, stereos and leather jackets. The atmosphere is more like "Cheers" than a pawn shop.
