Team looks to tame Wolverines

The IU men's track team opens the indoor track season against the Michigan Wolverines tomorrow at noon in the Gladstein Fieldhouse. The Hoosiers are expecting big things this season. All-American pole vaulter Dino Efthimiou and Big Ten champion Contrell Ash, who runs the 100- and 200-meter dashes, are two of the many point-scorers who return this season for the Hoosiers.

Team well prepared to compete after long stint of practicing

For the IU men's swimming team, it's been all practice since Dec.1, when they closed out a second-place finish at the US Open. With Saturday's home dual meet approaching, the Hoosiers are eager to get back into competition. "Over the Christmas break, we did some tremendous training and obviously, we'd like to go fast enough to touch before Ohio State in a majority of events and win the meet," head coach Kris Kirchner said. "We're looking at seven more weeks until our Big Ten meet, and this is our first step, our first competition, in over a month. I'm looking forward to restarting the engine and getting things rolling back on track."

Hoosiers play host to Buckeyes in dual meet

After intensive winter break training, the IU women's swimming and diving team is anxious to start the spring season this weekend in Big Ten competition. While the diving team ended its training with its Winter Invitational and Dive-Off last weekend, the swimming team hasn't raced in competition since Dec. 1.

Healthy Recker looks to lead Iowa

How could the Iowa Hawkeyes forget last season's games against IU? In the regular season, Iowa used one of its biggest comebacks to rally from being down 43-26 at halftime to beat IU 71-66 last Jan. 27 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. Of course, that same day, former IU guard Luke Recker, who transferred to Arizona and then Iowa, led the comeback with 27 points before fracturing his kneecap. The injury knocked Recker out for the rest of the season, and the Hawkeyes lost seven of their next nine to fall out of postseason contention.

Hoosiers look to turn corner in Big Ten season

Iowa coach Lisa Bluder recruited IU point guard Heather Cassady when Bluder was the coach at Drake University. So Bluder knows to keep an eye on Cassady when the Hawkeyes visit Assembly Hall Sunday afternoon. "I have always been a Heather Cassady fan...I think she's a tremendous point guard, and I think that's what makes Indiana so scary," said Bluder, the 2001 Big Ten Coach of the Year. "They have experience at those two very important positions: the post position and the point guard position."

Preparing for battle

It's inevitable. Luke Recker will get the attention. He'll catch the eye of IU players and the ire of Hoosier fans. He'll play an immense role in Sunday's match-up between two early Big Ten contenders when IU and Iowa meet at 1 p.m. in Iowa City's Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hoosiers have lost there six consecutive times.

Hoosiers invade Penn State

To knock off Penn State tonight, the IU women's basketball team doesn't plan to let the nation's leading scorer rack up her usual 20 or 30 points while containing only her teammates. Instead, the Hoosiers plan to stop Kelly Mazzante, who averages 26.3 points per game, IU coach Kathi Bennett said. Few teams have restrained Mazzante so far. The 6-foot guard scored a Big Ten record 49 points against Minnesota in Minneapolis Dec. 28. She has tallied at least 30 points six times.

Freshman rises to the Occasion

Jenny DeMuth seemed destined to play basketball for a Big Ten program in a hoops-crazy state since she came out of the womb. The day she was born, her dad's Connersville boys' basketball team captured the 1983 Indiana state title. Beginning in the second grade, DeMuth wouldn't leave her family's backyard until she perfected layups.

Grandpa's coaching proves to be beneficial

Heath Montgomery could've easily been turned off by swimming during high school. His grandfather was his coach, and arguments weren't uncommon. But Montgomery stuck with swimming, and now, as the only senior and co-captain of the IU squad, he not only competes in a variety of events, but also leads the team. "(High school) was interesting," Montgomery said. "It was tough, because my grandfather was my coach, and of course, you argue with your family more than anyone else, especially in a sporting situation. But it was a unique and interesting experience."

Martin determined to impact team

Junior swimmer Kristy Martin struggled through her sophomore season, but now having been able to train in the fall and through winter break, she is hoping to make a big impact. "Being able to train the whole year has been a benefit, and being able to do all of the team things has been much better," Martin said of her junior year. "I really don\'t like to set goals for myself; I like to just get in and race usually. But I think ultimately I would like to make the NCAAs."

Dinardo brings passion, charisma to program

He's a passionate person who didn't have any problem displaying emotion in his first day as IU's football coach. Thirty minutes after he was supposed to be announced as IU's 25th football coach Tuesday, Gerry DiNardo finally arrived at Memorial Stadium and went right to work.

Players encouraged after meeting coach

The waiting is over. For 34 days, the IU football team has been clueless about who its next leader will be, but was filled in yesterday after Gerry DiNardo was named head coach.

DiNardo expected to be new football coach

The vacant head football coaching position at IU is expected to be filled by Gerry DiNardo. Sources close to the team indicate that DiNardo will be the person introduced at a press conference at 5:30 p.m. today. After a lengthy waiting period for a decision about a coach, IU had the position narrowed down to four names, including DiNardo.

IU to take on Michigan St.

John Treloar knows what IU has to do if it hopes to upend Michigan State at 7 p.m. tonight in Assembly Hall. About 45 minutes into IU's practice Monday, the assistant coach barked this mind-boggling statistic: Michigan State has out-rebounded its opponent in 115 of its last 122 games. With that, the Hoosiers went to work, blocking out and crashing the glass in preparation for coach Tom Izzo's physical, hard-working Spartans.

Hoosiers clueless about updates, new coach may be named today

Hockey center quietly having another solid season

Hoosier center Brandon Phillips doesn't scare anyone with his size. At 5-foot-8, 155 pounds, the senior isn't the most imposing player on the ice, and more than a few opponents have watched him during the pre-game skate and anticipated the chance to squash him against the boards. But any opponent who has ever felt the impact of Phillips' check knows better. "He's been a real spark plug for us his whole career," said coach Rich Holdeman. "Looking at him, you'd think he was a finesse player, but he's actually a fairly tough player. For a guy who's not too big, he's pretty tough and he hits real well."

An appreciation of IU's greatest sport

In Indiana, soccer is king. Well OK, maybe that's stretching it just a little bit. In a state stereotyped as having a basketball hoop in every driveway or on the side of every barn, where kids dream of being the next great player who leads IU or Purdue deep into March Madness, how could soccer be king? To many Indiana college sports fans, late November/early December Madness just doesn't have the same ring to it. But what IU men's soccer head coach Jerry Yeagley has done with his teams during those cold winter months, which is college soccer's postseason, is quite remarkable and -- forgive me for saying this -- quite superior to any March Madness the Hoosiers have seen in a very long time.

Hoosiers look with anticipation toward next season

After a disappointing finish to any season, no matter how successful the season was, there is always a phrase that echoes through the corridors of the locker room. "Wait till next year." For most teams, those four words are just a coping mechanism, giving the team something to focus on other than losing. For the IU men's soccer team, it is a promise.

Competitors suffer from illness, flu

The first two days of the Indiana Dive Off against Purdue at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center were marked by a morning collegiate competition and an afternoon open competition. But, for sophomore Marc Carlton, the results were the same as he won both sessions off of the one-meter Friday and both off of the three-meter Saturday. "Marc Carlton had a real good training semester -- much better than last year -- and he did some real nice things this weekend," head coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "Marc's front three and a half pike really looked good on the three meter."

Frigid offense the culprit in Hoosiers' loss

MADISON, Wis. -- The Hoosiers' shooting woes have turned as ice-cold as the 17-degree temperature in this state capitol. The women's basketball team's offense has remained arctic during the last five games and completely iced over during a 10-minute stretch Thursday in IU's lopsided 74-54 loss to No. 12 Wisconsin (13-1, 4-0 Big Ten).
