Hoosiers finish in fifth

It's amazing what two weeks can do. Two weeks without competition. Two weeks to reflect on the last tournament. Two weeks to find any mistakes and correct them, and two weeks to get ready to win. That is exactly what the Hoosiers did on Saturday. Sunday, however, was a different story. The Hoosiers ended Saturday in second place, one shot back of leader Eastern Kentucky University, but fell in the standings Sunday to finish the tournament in fifth place.

Burns keys team success

One of the key ingredients for a successful cross country team is at least one runner the coach can count on for a solid performance every race. Head coach Robert Chapman said sophomore Thomas Burns fills that role for the Hoosiers.

Hoosiers travel to Ball State for Yestingsmeier Invitational

The men's golf team will have another chance to compete this weekend, when they participate for the first time in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind. The Invitational will be hosted by Ball State University and will feature a shotgun start Saturday morning at 8 a.m. The golfers have scheduled tee times from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Sunday morning.

Hoosiers host weekend tournament

One week after finishing in second place at the Maryland Tournament, the women's volleyball team will try to improve on a 7-2 record, their seventh best start in team history. They play host to Central Michigan, Butler and Louisville in the IU Credit Union tournament this weekend.

Team takes on regional rivals

The No. 23 men's cross country team will serve host to the Indiana Intercollegiates this Friday. The meet has a storied past as this will be the 64th time the annual race has been held. Though it is only the second meet of the year for the Hoosiers, it will be the team's final home meet of the season.

Hoosiers host Big Ten rival teams

The women's soccer team opens their Big Ten schedule this weekend with a games against Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Wisconsin game is 7 p.m. tonight and the Minnesota game starts at 1:30 p.m. Sunday. Both matches will be played at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Hoosiers try for .500 against Chippewas

Fife drafted by CBA

GARY -- The Gary Steelheads on Tuesday selected Indiana's Dane Fife as their top pick in the 2002 CBA Draft. Fife, the second overall pick in the draft, was the 2001-2002 Big Ten defensive player of the year and finished his career at IU as the school's all-time steals leader with 180 steals. The 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard was named to the NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team and was an NCAA All-South Regional selection.

It's not foreign to them

If sophomore linebacker Martin Lapostolle or freshman punter Tyson Beattie are ever recognized as All-American players, there will be a certain amount of irony involved. After all, neither one is an American citizen. Lapostolle hails from Montreal, Canada, and Beattie is a native of Perth, Australia.

One step at a time

One match, one game, one point at a time. This doctrine has been the 2002 women's volleyball team's motto. The Hoosiers are off to one of their best starts in team history, going 7-2 after nine matches with one of the losses coming in the closing moments of the final game against the Dayton Flyers. With just one more win, the team will have already tied last season's total win column in a third of the matches.

Freshmen look to contribute this season

Freshman Scott Seibert, Brad Marek and Joe Miller have it much easier than the freshman from last year men's golf team. They have time to adapt to the transition from high school golf to college golf because all of last year's starters returned to the team.

Juniors lead team to winning start

The women's golf team finished the the Big Ten championship tournament with their worst performance in 19 years with a sixth place finish. The Hoosiers didn't improve their performance at the NCAA Central Regional, where they placed a disappointing 16th, failing to qualify for the NCAA Championship tournament. This season those records have all changed.

Cycling Club bound for nationals

When people hear the words "Bloomington" and "cycling" in the same sentence, they habitually think "Little 500." However, this annual event, which perpetuates IU's fabled "greatest college weekend," is far from the only race cyclists prepare for in this town.

Hoosiers respond to new coach with wins

Sometimes change and adversity can tear a team apart. For this year's IU women's soccer team, just the opposite has happened. After a disappointing season last year, Athletics Director Michael McNeely brought in a new coaching staff and the Hoosier women entered the 2002 preseason not knowing what to expect. "I feel like (the transition) has brought us a lot closer. We knew we had to work as a team to get better," sophomore midfielder Kim Grodek said. "We've had to work a lot harder this year."

California combo

These days, the song "I Wish They All Could Be California Girls" has probably taken on a whole new meaning for field hockey coach Amy Robertson. Robertson said she has been happy with her team's overall play of late and has seen two California bred freshman, back Morgan Albini and midfielder Lesley Wiler make significant contributions to the squad. "The great thing for them is they're getting more experience than most freshmen," Robertson said. "They're two players that will greatly influence our future success."

After season ending injury, Mack is back

Last season, the men's soccer team ended their season one game away from the NCAA championships playing without one of their stars. Now, senior Ryan Mack is back, and wants to help lead the Hoosiers back to the title game. Mack's season ended prematurely last year due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament, leaving a hole in the midfield. Mack's return could complete the puzzle for the Hoosiers to return to championship glory from 1998 and 1999 in Mack's freshman and sophomore years. Already this season, following the Hoosier's defeat of Hartwick and Air Force in the Butler Classic last weekend, Mack was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week.
