Lo Duca leaves games with injured jaw

·

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca left in the third inning of Monday night's game against Houston with a sprained jaw after he was hit in the face by a foul tip. The ball came off Jeff Kent's bat and struck the base of Lo Duca's mask, knocking it off his head and causing a brief delay while assistant trainer Matt Wilson and manager Jim Tracy checked on him. The same thing happened Saturday night, after a foul tip by Colorado's Preston Wilson struck Lo Duca in the same spot.

Powers welcomed back

·

Experience and depth may be two major aspects that could propel the men's cross country team to a very successful season this year. With the return of senior Chris Powers, the Hoosiers will only add to this depth and experience. Last season Powers redshirted his junior year to pursue studies abroad. He now has one year left of eligibility, and his coach is certainly glad that he is back.

Giesler running to top of Big Ten

·

For most collegiate runners, breaking a conference record would satisfy one's competitive desires. But senior Hoosier Audrey Giesler wants much more than just a Big Ten Conference record. During the 2002 outdoor track season, Giesler set the Big Ten Conference outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase record by running a 10:14.9. This time also qualified her for the USA Track and Field Championships held this past June in Stanford, Calif. Giesler said that winning

IU utilized three different running backs throughout Saturday's game. Sophomore Chris Taylor had the most success, gaining 79 yards on 13 carries. Senior Brian Lewis rushed 11 times for 33 yards, and freshman BenJarvus Green-Ellis carried seven times for 18 yards in his Hoosier debut. "I think we have three good running backs," coach Gerry DiNardo said. "I just felt like we'd be OK playing all three."

LoVecchio out-dueled in debut; struggles in first half

·

East Hartford, Conn. -- Quarterback Matt LoVecchio probably didn't envision an IU debut quite like this. The junior, who sat out last season as a transfer from Notre Dame, struggled against UConn amid dropped passes, turnovers and a defense that limited him to only 28 yards passing in the first half of IU's 34-10 loss.

UConn hands IU tough loss

·

East Hartford, Conn. -- Four years vs. 104. That's how long the University of Connecticut has been playing Division I-A football compared to IU's tenure in the Big Ten. But on Saturday, it seemed the opposite as UConn manhandled the Hoosiers offensively and defensively to claim a 34-10 rout in the opening of Rentschler Field. The much anticipated debut of junior quarterback Matt LoVecchio never got off the ground as two UConn offensive stars -- junior Dan Orlovsky and sophomore Terry Caulley -- stole the show. Orlovsky completed 26 of 42 passes for 307 yards while Caulley gained 170 yards on 22 carries. Coach Gerry DiNardo said he didn't expect the offense's inefficiency and IU's three fumbles that resulted in turnovers.

IU on cutting edge with state-of-the-art field surface

·

IU players still have bad memories of losing to Penn State late last season on a Memorial Stadium turf made more of sand than grass. "The turf got so bad last year, it was basically a beach in the middle of the field," senior safety and captain Joe Gonzalez said. "They were painting the sand green to make it blend in."

A fresh start

The Matt LoVecchio era of IU football is about to officially begin. The junior quarterback who sat out last season after transferring from Notre Dame will make his Hoosier debut Saturday in IU's season opener at Connecticut. And although LoVecchio has been a big-game quarterback before -- leading Notre Dame to a Fiesta Bowl berth as a freshman -- he isn't getting ahead of himself.
