IU ready for return home after meet

After 31 season best performances at the Indiana Invitational, IU women's track and field coach Randy Heisler said he was looking for more stellar performances from his athletes over the weekend at the Canon IV Classic in Plainfield, Ind.

Hoosiers put on strong display

Severe winter weather could not keep the No. 24 men's track and field team off the roads this weekend. They traveled to Plainfield, Ind., for the Canon IV Classic to compete against athletes from all over the country. Schools from Florida, Colorado, Tennessee and Michigan were represented as well as several elite high school athletes to provide solid competition for the meet in most events. Team scores were not kept for the meet.

Hoosiers beat Wildcats

After losing four consecutive Big Ten dual meets, the IU wrestling team got on track against Northwestern Friday night. Things were looking up for the Hoosiers from the start when freshman Joe Dubuque returned to the lineup for the first time since Jan. 24.

Valentin drains 17 first-half points

MADISON, Wis. -- It has almost been like a broken record for freshman guard Cyndi Valentin this season. She just keeps having good games over and over again. Valentin, typically the smallest player on the floor, has been doing this the whole season. But this time it was in a Big Ten road victory, IU's first such victory of the season.

Team gets sweet revenge in 49-48 road win

MADISON, Wisc. -- Through many lead changes and runs from both teams, the women's basketball team was still able to defeat the Wisconsin Badgers 49-48 on Sunday. IU improved to 11-11 overall and 4-8 in the Big Ten while the Badgers fell to 7-17 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten. The two teams last met in Bloomington when Wisconsin won the battle 69-58.

Men's tennis wins 8 straight

The beginning of the conference season and a long road trip didn't stop the No. 40 men's tennis team from extending their season-opening winning streak. With victories over Big Ten foes Northwestern and Wisconsin over the weekend, IU extended their streak to eight straight games.

Strickland emerges as impact player

MADISON, Wis. -- There's more than one freshman guard on the IU men's basketball team who is becoming an impact player. Marshall Strickland, a newly-named starter for the Hoosiers, made this much apparent when IU traveled to Wisconsin Saturday to take on the Badgers. Strickland played in all but three minutes of the game and picked up the second highest points scored and boards grabbed for the team.

Second-half disaster

MADISON, Wis. -- After defeating Michigan last Wednesday at Assembly Hall, it seemed as though the Hoosiers had regained some of their confidence. They talked about their elevated intensity on defense and their improved execution on offense. It was just a matter of proving that they could do those same things on the road, where they had yet to win a Big Ten game. That quest began on Saturday against Wisconsin, who had yet to lose a conference home game. It appeared as though the Hoosiers (15-9, 5-6 Big Ten) had found their niche against the Badgers heading into the locker room at halftime with a 29-21 lead.

Former softball player evolves into track star

Team prepares for month-long road trip

About a month from today the IU softball team will play its first home game of the season. Until then, the Hoosiers will play in a season opening 20-game road trip, beginning Friday in Las Cruces, N.M. at the New Mexico State tournament when IU takes on the San Jose State Spartans.

Hoosiers hope to pick on hapless Wildcats

Northwestern, by all accounts, is a desperate team. The Wildcats have lost their last eight dual meets and are winless in conference action. In the team's last meet, they suffered a blowout loss against Minnesota losing 41-3, and the Wildcats cannot claim any ranked starters. One would probably think when IU and Northwestern square off at 7 p.m. tonight at the University Gym, that the smart money is on IU to end its conference losing streak.

IU looks to continue winning ways

The IU men's tennis team is going to have to get used to the road. The team, winners of six straight, will take on No. 39 Northwestern and Wisconsin this weekend to begin an eight game road swing. IU doesn't return home again until the last weekend in March, when they host Penn State and Ohio State.

Team goes coast to coast in consecutive weekends

After a West Coast trip that resulted in three losses to some of the best competition in the country, the No.14 women's water polo team is ready to use what they learned in this weekend's Princeton Invitational. The team, who was defeated by powerhouses No. 1 Stanford and No. 5 Cal last weekend, will travel to Princeton, N.J. on Saturday to face off against Bucknell in the morning and Brown in the afternoon.

IU travels to Canon IV Classic

Bryant still missing from US team roster

Bryant still missing from US team roster Ray Allen, Tim Duncan, Jason Kidd and Tracy McGrady were the first four players chosen Thursday for the 2004 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, with Kobe Bryant conspicuously absent. The long-awaited roster was announced in Colorado Springs, Colo., by USA Basketball, which also issued a statement regarding Bryant's absence.

No. 17 Hoosiers continue indoor season in Indy

This weekend the No. 17 men's track and field team continues its indoor season with the Canon IV Classic in Indianapolis. The team was originally scheduled to travel to Arkansas this weekend, but problems with the plane tickets led coach Marshall Goss to decide to stay in-state and run in this meet.

Tourney gives IU a chance at revenge

The IU hockey team will get a second chance at a conference title this weekend. The Hoosiers will travel to Rochester, Mich., to play for the Great Midwest Hockey League tournament title. IU (15-8-1, 5-4-1) missed a chance at a regular season title last weekend with a 6-2 loss to Oakland University (20-6-4, 7-2-1). The victory moved Oakland ahead of Michigan for sole possession of first place. Michigan held on to second place and, along with Oakland, received a bye in the first round of the six-team GMHL tournament.

Hoosiers start 3-game road trip against Badgers

Finally, the travesty that dominated the conversations of IU basketball fans everywhere is over. The long, arduous three-week stretch that will forever live in Hoosier lore as "the streak," came to a merciful end on Wednesday night: Michigan -- 49, IU -- 63.

DeMuth and Bodine help lead Hoosiers to 21-point blowout

It finally came together for the 10-11 (3-8 Big Ten) Hoosier women's basketball team against 12-10 (4-7) Iowa on Thursday night. They defeated the Hawkeyes 89-68 in a contest that coach Kathi Bennett said has helped the team regain their confidence. Helping lead the Hoosiers to their first victory since Jan.12 were senior guard Kristen Bodine and sophomore guard/forward Jenny DeMuth.

Hot-shooting Hoosiers gun down Hawkeyes

Behind red-hot shooting and four double-figure scorers, the IU women's basketball team defeated Iowa 89-68 Thursday night at Assembly Hall. It snapped a seven-game losing skid, which began on Jan. 16. The Hoosiers last win came against then No. 23 Ohio State on Jan. 12. "It felt good and I thought we played really well," IU coach Kathi Bennett said. "Our transition game was working extremely well. We got transition going and ran the floor hard, and that led to some easy baskets."
