Hoosiers claim Virginia Duals championship

With a Big Ten conference that features nine top-25 teams and five in the top 10, the IU wrestling team knew it had to make the most of its non-conference schedule in preparation for the Big Ten season. Consider the mission accomplished. The No. 15 Hoosiers went 4-0 in this weekend's Virginia Duals, winning the championship and taking a 9-0 dual record into the conference season. IU coach Duane Goldman said while this weekend's duals won't do anything to help the team's Big Ten record, he still feels that it will give team members confidence heading into the tough road ahead.

With Monroe playing fill-in, Calloway draws Dee Brown

When junior guard Earl Calloway made the journey from a junior college in Atlanta to Bloomington, he had a lot of change to deal with -- a change in temperature and a big change in the level of play. But he was still fast. Tonight, the Georgia native will get to show just how quick he is when he squares off against Illini guard Dee Brown, whose speed is well-documented. "The thing about Dee is that he is quick, but he is a change-of-speed type of player, going from slow to fast," said senior guard Marshall Strickland, who has seen a great deal of Brown in his four-year career. "Earl is fast all the time."

Midwest meltdown: Panthers dominate top defense

CHICAGO -- On Carolina's second snap of the game, Steve Smith gave the Chicago Bears a preview of the long night ahead at Soldier Field. The Panthers receiver maneuvered around Charles Tillman as the defensive back stumbled on the sideline, gathered in a pass after a nice double pump by Jake Delhomme and then used a nifty move to sidestep Mike Brown. Just 55 seconds into the game, Smith was in the end zone. Chicago's defense, which carried the Bears to a division title and playoff berth for the first time in four years, was left grabbing all day -- especially at Smith. And now the Panthers are headed to Seattle for the NFC Championship game after beating Chicago 29-21 Sunday.

Colts' near-perfect season ends in disappointment

INDIANAPOLIS -- Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward was in disbelief after the Steelers 21-18 defeat of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. "I thought the game was over several times. I thought we won, then I though we lost ... didn't you?" asked the wide-eyed Ward after the Steelers dominated the Colts, only to give them several opportunities to get back into the game in the final quarter. "We didn't try to do it like this - trust me." Ward couldn't have been the only one shocked by the Colts' loss or the method by which the Steelers handed them that loss, a rare occurrence in a season that saw Indianapolis race to a 13-0 record and a shot at an undefeated regular season.

Valentin seals free throw record as Hoosiers cruise to victory

Senior guard Cyndi Valentin wasted no time putting the NCAA record for consecutive free throws made behind her. With 7:03 remaining in the second half of IU's 69-56 victory over Northwestern Thursday night, Valentin stepped to the charity stripe and promptly made the first of two shots, her 61st consecutive free throw.

No. 32 Hoosiers start '06 season with pair of MAC opponents

Like a hitter digging into the batter's box, she plants her right foot just behind the free throw line. Once set, the left foot follows. After receiving the ball, she dribbles six times with her left hand. Following the sixth dribble, she places her right index finger over the air insertion hole. Ever so slightly, she bends her knees and then quickly straightens them as her arm extends and the ball smoothly rolls off her fingertips.

No. 9 IU falls to Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Despite being the higher-ranked team, both history and injury stood firmly against IU in its 87-73 loss Wednesday night. The No. 9 Hoosiers came into the contest against No. 15 Michigan State having not won a game in Breslin Center since 1991. IU (10-3, 2-1) was also without senior guard Lewis Monroe and sophomore forward D.J. White -- two key contributors who could have helped ward off a hungry Spartan team that was winless in conference play. Michigan State (13-4, 1-2) capitalized on their absence.

Coach to join MLS combine

From December 26 to the end of January, IU men's soccer coach Mike Freitag will have traveled more miles than many soccer teams have ever traveled during the regular season. The day after Christmas, Freitag left for the Disney Soccer Showcase in Orlando, Fla., which Freitag called, "the premier recruiting tournament in the country." Then, he returned to the Midwest for the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Presentation in his native St. Louis last Friday (senior Brian Plotkin was a finalist for the award), and yesterday he departed for Carson, Calif., as Major League Soccer invited Freitag out to coach at the four-day 2006 adidas MLS Player Combine at The Home Depot Center, which concludes Sunday.

IU looks to rebound after 2 close losses

In only their fifth game of Big Ten play, the IU women's basketball team can match last year's season total for wins in the conference. The Hoosiers (8-7, 2-2 Big Ten) recorded three wins in the Big Ten last season. Two of those wins came against Northwestern (4-10, 0-4 Big Ten), who welcomes IU to Evanston, Ill. Thursday night. The Hoosiers are coming off two close losses to opponents ranked in the Top 25, including No. 12 Purdue and No. 17 Minnesota. Both losses came by a combined total of 10 points.

Frustrations get best of Hoosiers in first Big Ten loss

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- As the Michigan State lead swelled throughout the second half, IU's frustration only mounted. On this night, the cooler heads would prevail. Among the seemingly endless string of Hoosier frustrations were reach-in fouls, verbal spats and continuous loose balls bouncing into awaiting Spartan arms. But perhaps nothing was as continually agonizing for the Hoosiers as the multiple Spartan shots that dropped as the shot clock buzzer sounded.

Freshman Ben Allen looks to step into expanded role

Freshman center Ben Allen broke out against Indiana State last month, scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. But his performance couldn't earn him much extra playing time because sophomore forward D.J. White was gradually becoming healthy again and resuming his starting role.

D.J. White sidelined again

Sophomore forward D.J. White is out indefinitely after injuring his left foot in Saturday's game against Ohio State, IU coach Mike Davis announced Monday. The injury is on the same foot White hurt earlier this year, but the location is different. "It is a significant injury to the foot," team trainer Tim Garl said. "It is a different injury to a different part of the foot than he had originally. Originally, it was more of a stress fracture that happened over time. This is an injury that happened from a specific episode."

Russell qualifies for Commonwealth Games

Junior Colin Russell earned the rare opportunity to represent his native country when he qualified for Canada's Commonwealth Games team during the nation's trials held Nov. 23-26 at Saanich Commonwealth Place in Victoria, B.C. "Wearing my country's colors and representing Canada for me is a great feeling," Russell said. "I love Canada and what it stands for. It's an honor." Russell was born in Barrie, Ontario, after which he moved to Florida and Spain and then returned to Canada to decide whether to attend a Canadian or American school.

IU drops 2nd consecutive Big Ten game in Assembly Hall

Hanging high above Branch McCracken court, IU coach Sharon Versyp appeared on the scoreboard and proclaimed the keys to victory prior to Monday night's match-up with No. 17 Minnesota (10-3, 3-0 Big Ten). Number one on the list was dominating the boards. That did not happen. Minnesota finished with six more rebounds than IU (8-7, 2-2 Big Ten), 13 offensive rebounds and a 69-64 victory.

Hoosier duo sets free throw shooting records

While Monday's game against No. 15 Minnesota will go down in the books as a loss, two IU players will go into the record books for personal achievements. With 2:11 remaining in the second half, senior forward Jenny DeMuth stepped to the free throw line. With the Hoosiers down by six, DeMuth sunk both shots, breaking IU all-time career free throw record of 443. The record was previously held by Denise Jackson, IU's all-time leading scorer with 1,917 points. DeMuth entered Monday's action needing to hit seven free throws to tie the record and eight to break it. On the night, the senior sunk all ten of her free throw attempts in leading the Hoosiers with 18 points.
