Sophomore forward D.J. White is out indefinitely after injuring his left foot in Saturday's game against Ohio State, IU coach Mike Davis announced Monday. The injury is on the same foot White hurt earlier this year, but the location is different.\n"It is a significant injury to the foot," team trainer Tim Garl said. "It is a different injury to a different part of the foot than he had originally. Originally, it was more of a stress fracture that happened over time. This is an injury that happened from a specific episode."\nThe trauma occurred when White fell to the ground and an Ohio State player accidentally stepped on him. Garl said the prognosis remains unknown.\n"I would say he is out a minimum of four to six weeks and quite possibly longer than that," Garl said. "It becomes an issue not only of healing but then also of conditioning ... When the first injury occurred he was in very good shape from running and everything, but then he lost a lot of that conditioning by being out."\nWhite's current physical state and multiple injuries will impact his return, Garl said.\n"In four to six weeks from now we have to feel that he will be fairly out of shape," Garl said. "He's going to probably demand a little bit more rest and recovery."\nRedshirting is an option for the \nreigning Big Ten Freshman of the Year under the NCAA's medical hardship rule. According to the rule, a player pursuing a medical hardship redshirt must sustain the injury in the first half of the season without participating in more than 20 percent of the scheduled games. The NCAA then reviews the case only after receiving documented medical proof of a player's inability to compete.\nWhite could potentially qualify, having only seen action in five of IU's 28 games, or just under 18 percent, but Davis said White expressed his desire to come back this season in a conversation the two had.\n"It's his decision (to redshirt)," Davis said. "It isn't going to be my decision. It'll be a family decision whether he'll redshirt or not. But he wants to come back."\nWhite averaged 13.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game last season and has posted 9.2 points, six rebounds and 1.4 blocks per outing this season, despite being at what Davis deemed a 50 or 60 percent ability level.\nDavis described White as a fast healer who stays positive and keeps his spirits up.\n"I am disappointed about the injury, but I think we have the type of team that rallies around these kind of things," White said in a statement. "We have several player who can step up inside with Marco (Killingsworth), Ben (Allen), Sean (Kline) and even Robert (Vaden)."\nWhite was unavailable for comment Monday.
