Coverdale's injury inspires late run

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- When junior Tom Coverdale stepped on Kent State's Eric Thomas' foot and crumbled to the floor, there was 9:35 left in Saturday night's game against the Golden Flashes. The Hoosiers had just put the finishing touches on a 19-9 run and had built a 59-41 lead.

Down to the wire

On lap 93 of the 100-lap race, Kappa Alpha Theta senior took the exchange, hopped on her Mongoose bike and built a quarter of a lap lead on the four teams that remained on the lead lap, Roadrunners, Kappa Delta and Alpha Gamma Delta. With a quarter of a lap remaining in the race, Johnson could not make up the half a straightaway lead that Roadrunner senior Jenn Wangerin had built in the final lap to win the 14th running of the women's Little 500. "I just don't believe it's over," Wangerin said. "It really came together for us."

Miami takes down IU

A final-second save by Miami of Ohio senior goalkeeper Marie Vaughn gave the Redhawks a 2-1 victory against the Hoosiers in the season opener Sunday at Mellencamp Pavilion. In front of a crowd of 136, the largest crowd in the program's history, the second-year Hoosier program improved on a 9-0 loss last year against the Redhawks.

Frontrunners in playoff race

As the dog days of August come to an end, the excitement of the baseball season has grown exponentially. Five of the six division races are still up for grabs, the wild card race is anybody's guess, and, of course, there is the ever present home run race. While no race can match the excitement brought in 1998's record breaking season, this year's race is special for one reason: All of the frontrunners also find themselves in a pennant race.

Hoosiers still in Big Ten title hunt

Wednesday was a big goof -- a black mark on IU's Big Ten slate. But Mike Davis' message was simple, and he said it even before IU lost to Wisconsin in Assembly Hall Wednesday: Win or lose, the Hoosiers are still on top of the Big Ten.

Team splits weekend matches

The IU women's tennis team split its road matches this weekend. The Hoosiers traveled to Madison, Wis., on Saturday and beat the Badgers 4-3 but lost 4-3 to Minnesota on Sunday. IU is 14-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.

Moye sparks Hoosiers, crowd

INDIANAPOLIS- Luke Recker was definitely the star of Saturday's first Big Ten semifinal at Conseco Fieldhouse. But sophomore A.J. Moye was the star for the Hoosiers. In his usual role of coming off the bench, Moye gave IU a huge lift throughout the game Saturday, scoring 14 points in 25 minutes of action. He also drew an offensive foul and played terrific defense on whomever he was guarding.

Pair loses in tournament, misses quarterfinals

Karie Schlukebir and Linda Tran would have liked one more victory. The junior-sophomore pair had been invincible since March 9, winning 15 doubles matches in a row before falling last week, one round short of All-American status.

Take me out to the ball game

One of my favorite advertisements I have ever laid my eyes upon in a magazine was for a then-new Major League Baseball video game. It had a Wrigley Field worker looking out onto the field from inside the monstrous green scoreboard that sits behind the centerfield bleachers. Under the worker in the picture the type says, "If heaven were anything like Wrigley Field on a Saturday afternoon, then death wouldn't be so bad." We should adopt that as our national motto.

Davis negotiates for salary raise

IU Men's Basketball Coach Mike Davis will be getting a pay raise soon. Director of Athletics Michael McNeely, Davis and his agent are currently negotiating the raise and the final announcement will be made by the end of the week, said Terry Clapacs, IU vice president and chief administrative officer.

How sweet it is

SACRAMENTO -- With just more than 46 seconds left in Saturday night's game in Arco Arena, junior Kyle Hornsby made a layup and drew a foul, giving the Hoosiers a seven-point lead on North Carolina-Wilmington. This was after IU had burned two timeouts trying to get the ball past half-court against the Seahawks' trapping press. As Hornsby pumped his fist, IU coach Mike Davis slid down into his courtside chair, legs and arms extended, palms open to the sky and a big smile on his face, as if to say "Finally."

Kram leaves legacy

Losing a leader is never easy. But, the women's soccer team is losing not only a leader in graduating senior Kelly Kram, but also a dedicated teammate, an experienced player and a humorous personality. After four years of stellar play for the Hoosiers, Kram will graduate tomorrow with a degree in exercise science.

Davis' words stir controversy

When Christmas break began, the Hoosiers sat at 6-2 and were coming off of two consecutive wins in their first two home games of the season. IU was headed to Miami to take on the Hurricanes and escape the cold of the Midwest. Things change, and they did for the Hoosiers over the last three weeks. What IU men's basketball coach Mike Davis was doing in the courtroom began to receive more attention than wins and losses.

Associated Press reports that IU offers coaching job to Davis

Indiana has offered interim coach Mike Davis the permanent position as basketball coach, a source close to the university said Wednesday. Davis and university representatives were negotiating details of his contract Wednesday, said the source, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Jeffries awaits draft fate

He has been a high school McDonald's All-American, the Big Ten Most Valuable Player and a key member of a Final Four team. On Wednesday, Jared Jeffries will add first-round draft pick to his list of accolades at the NBA Draft in New York City. The former IU star will likely be a top-10 selection, according to draft analysts for espn.com and cnnsi.com.

Paying his dues

Imagine this: The setting is the difficult Bethpage Black golf course during the U.S. Open. In the first round of play, a player posts six birdies -- more than any other player in the field. His good play continues through the second round, he makes the cut, and this player finds himself paired with Greg "The Shark" Norman to begin Saturday's round. The player continues to shoot well, and he finishes tied with "The Shark" at the end of the day. By the end of the 72nd hole on Sunday, the player finishes ahead of such notable players as Norman, John Daly -- a PGA champion, Jesper Parnevik and tied with Jose-Maria Olazabal -- a two-time Masters champ
