Attorneys say sniper Malvo is seeking a deal

ROCKVILLE, Md. -- Convicted Washington-area sniper Lee Boyd Malvo is seeking a broad plea agreement in which he would plead guilty to other 2002 shootings that authorities have linked him to, defense attorneys and Maryland prosecutors said Tuesday.

Like most university lectures, Angelo Pizzo's began with a lengthy introduction with an academic lauding of the speaker's accomplishments Tuesday night. But Pizzo, the screenwriter of the beloved 1986 movie "Hoosiers," about a small-town high school basketball team's journey to the state-title game, delivered a speech that wandered far off the path of the usual academic lecture.

Big names arrive for HIV/AIDS benefit

IU defeats DePaul, Purdue during home tournament

The IU men's club volleyball team hosted the seventh annual Hoosier Fall Classic Oct. 7 in the HPER Wildermuth Gym. Twenty teams made the trip to Bloomington to participate in the day-long preseason event. IU welcomed teams from all over the Midwest and around the country, including Big Ten rivals Illinois and Purdue. The Illinois A squad team won the tournament.

The IU men's soccer team dominated the pace of play for the first 83 minutes of Wednesday night's game against IU-Purdue University Indianapolis, taking a 2-0 lead over the Jaguars. However, with eight of the original 11 starters for the Hoosiers sitting on the sideline, IUPUI scored two goals in five minutes to send the game into overtime.

Library holds film series on democracy, national elections

When Kate Cruikshank, Lilly Library's political papers specialist, first saw Matt Kohn's documentary, "Call It Democracy," she was captivated and wanted to share it. She is now facilitating a four-part film series titled "How Democratic are Elections in the U.S.?," featuring documentary-style films intended to educate IU students about the upcoming November elections, as well as inform students of election policies and American government in general.

Putin vs. the press

I know many will say it's not such a good idea to give the Bush administration suggestions on where to spread democracy next, but I'm not too worried. If the man doesn't read national newspapers, chances are he's not going to read the Indiana Daily Student. Nevertheless, I would like to suggest that Bush encourage Russia to swallow a heavy dose of liberty. I recognize that democracy there only dates back to 1991, so they're fairly new at this, but in light of recent events, I find it very hard to believe that Russia's system is healthy.

National Coming Out Day to be celebrated at IU

GPSO starts health, wellness initiative for grad students

For graduate students at IU who can't find motivation to exercise and be healthy, there are now free bagels, basketball tickets and personal training sessions at the Student Recreational Sports Center to give an incentive to work out. On Monday, search-engine titan Google acquired the post-your-own-videos site YouTube for a cool $1.65 billion. While this deal is significant in and of itself, the major implications will be determined in the coming months as owners of copyrighted content and their lawyers challenge YouTube users' freedom to upload video clips -- the freedom that made YouTube valuable in the first place.

Satisfying sustainability supporters

Everyone knows that IU is better than Purdue -- it's a simple fact of life. Our campus is more attractive, our academics better and even our lack of a real mascot is superior to their Purdue Pete. However, IU has been falling behind Purdue and many other universities in a very critical area: campus environmental sustainability. While our School of Public and Environmental Administration is no slouch, Purdue has both a Center for the Environment and an Interdisciplinary Center for Ecological Sustainability. What's going on here?

McCain criticizes former President Clinton on North Korean policy
