Big Ten Network too specific for basic cable

·

I love the Big Ten. I love the rough-and-tough style of play across the board in all athletic competitions. I love the rivalries that have sprung up throughout the years between teams and, consequently, the fans. I love thousands of students cheering and booing in the spirit of sport. I love the oxymoronic nature of having 11 teams in the conference. Heck, I even love Ohio State head basketball coach Thad Matta – and nobody likes Thad Matta, especially all those people he beats.

Anglo-reality

·

SALAMANCA, Spain – Never before in my life have I been as jealous of a 6-year-old as I am now of my Spanish host family’s daughter. Sometimes at dinner, when “Rosita” is whining about not wanting to eat her peas, I will hear her throw in a Spanish word conjugated perfectly in the subjunctive mood without even pausing to think about it.

Born country

·

I‘ve lived in or near two Indiana cities in my life: Lafayette and Bloomington. Both cities provide an aspect of our home state that isn’t necessarily representative.

Academic roosting of chickens

·

Last week, the battle for academic freedom took an interesting turn. The University of Colorado Board of Regents voted 8-1 to fire Professor Ward Churchill. A committee concluded he had engaged in research misconduct that included fabrication, falsification, improper citation and plagiarism.

Banking on a BA

It’s no secret that Kelley students think oh-so-highly of themselves, nor is it any secret that the University’s liberal arts students consider them money-grubbing consumerist whores (or so it’s rumored), but do the differences in expected salaries make these common misconceptions true?
