Open letter of support for the Black Student Union at IU-Bloomington

We stand with the people around the country calling for justice and racial equality in American society.  Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel once said, “the opposite of good is not evil, the opposite of good is indifference.” He said this to wake up the masses during the Civil Rights Movement to bring people to their feet and combat racial inequality.

'We can't breathe'

Last Friday, Indiana University joined the national movement in protesting against the grand jury’s ruling to not indict white police officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown, an African-American teenager.  The rally demonstrates the student body standing in solidarity with the protestors in Ferguson, signaling that IU students too, believe an injustice was carried out at the expense of a life.  Although the possibility of a criminal case against Wilson is no longer an option, http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2014/08/13/us/ferguson-missouri-town-under-siege-after-police-shooting.html  the death of Brown has resulted in the nation taking a hard, but ultimately positive introspective look at what exactly lines the fabric of American society today.  In the wake of Brown’s death, police brutality has risen to the national limelight.

Lyndsay Jones, 22, stands in front of the Pour House Cafe on Kirkwood Ave. on Nov. 8. During her first semester at IU in 2013, she was sexually assaulted by her friend at his apartment. After completing her sophomore year at IU, she returned to Lafayette to earn enough money to return to classes at IU in the spring. She used to hang out with her friends at the Pour House and still stops by when in town to visit with friends. Lyndsay reported being sexually assaulted to the Office of Student Ethics and participated in a hearing, but her case resulted no finding.

Imagine a chicken farm in Who Knows Where, Middle America, where an abundance of healthy, happy chickens are endlessly frolicking about in the open air, pecking and scratching about to their hearts content.

Ending campus rape

·

Together, we know a lot of victims of rape and sexual assault. Curiously, none of us seem to know any rapists.
