High expectations surround Big Ten

·

With four of its 11 teams ranked in the national Top 25, the Big Ten conference is not lacking in recognition. Nor is it lacking in competition, according to its coaches. In fact, coaches like Northwestern's Randy Walker believe the Big Ten is as fierce as ever, especially for this upcoming season.

Quest for 3-peat begins this evening

·

Only one team has ever been able to win three straight Division I men's soccer national titles. IU has won back-to-back titles twice before, but hopes this year its eight returning starters can make the third try a charm. But the Hoosiers certainly won't have any grace period as they must get by the No. 7 and No. 10 preseason ranked teams this weekend. Wake Forest and Southern Methodist come to Bloomington this weekend as the Hoosiers host the 23rd annual Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.

Hoosier 'O' looking for less zeros

·

Zero. A number the Hoosiers have had to see a lot of this past week after returning home from the University of Southern California Tournament with zero wins and zero goals. IU hopes to buck that trend this weekend at the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge -- playing matches at Missouri and Iowa State.

Palestinians agree to Israeli inspection of goods entering Gaza

·

RAMALLAH, West Bank -- The Palestinians agreed Thursday that Israel can retain control over goods coming into Gaza to safeguard against arms smuggling, yielding a key point on border arrangements after Israel completes its Gaza pullout this month. Palestinian Foreign Minister Nasser Al Kidwa said Israel could exercise some control over goods but not over people entering Gaza, while Israel insists it must also have the power to keep militants out. Even so, the Palestinian gesture was the first sign of progress toward solving the issue of border crossings -- vital for Palestinians, who would otherwise be penned into the seaside territory.

Balancing budget burdens

·

Athletes deserve to receive tutoring if they need it. And sensibly, the academic side of the University should supervise this tutoring, relieving the IU Athletics Department of temptations that could lead to academic scandals (as witnessed at other Big Ten universities). That does not, however, translate into a mandate for all students on the academic side of the school to foot the bill.

Stone carver prospers by sculpting 'gargoyles'

·

BARTLETT, Ill. -- Walter S. Arnold was helping a monster break free of its stone prison. "This is actually a grotesque, not a gargoyle," the stone carver explained as he used a hydraulic lift to position the heavy figure of Indiana limestone. "Most people call them all gargoyles, but a gargoyle, technically, is a waterspout attached to a building. This guy's a freestanding figure, so he's a grotesque."

Eagerly, she waited for the hot skillet to cool some so her grandmother would let her cook. She learned to put a piece of cheese on a cracker and let it melt.
