Workshop of wonder
IU professor of String Technology Tom Sparks was 14 when he took apart his mother’s 18th century violin with a kitchen knife. He wanted to know how it worked, and naturally tried to find out for himself.

After 30 years of teaching on IU’s campus, Iris Rosa is full of energy, enthusiasm and concern for her students.
Eat the local food, drink the local water and don’t worry about the dysentery that you’ll probably acquire – it’s not that bad.
NEW YORK – Britney Spears’ “Blackout” is coming sooner than expected.
For junior Noam Siegel, starting his own business is not a dream for his future but one he is living right now. Siegel, creator of the computer repair company NE Computing Services, started repairing computers his freshman year of high school. His growing business now offers the same services to IU students.
The IU Student Association will be holding a symposium on the “Future of Student Governance” this Saturday at the Indiana Memorial Union, which will focus on and discuss how effective the student organization performs as a whole.
BERLIN – At first glance, the letter carefully printed in a child’s hand seems innocuous, nothing more than the expression of a young crush: “I love you so much. Write me – please. Many greetings. Your Gina.”

I am writing in response to the article on the Tudor Room’s new policy for tipping. Before becoming a professor, I worked in the food service industry for 15 years; waiting tables, catering parties, organizing formal wine tasting parties and even consulting on general operations of other restaurants.
Right-wing columnists are abundant in college newspapers (I can attest to the situation at Ohio State, where I graduated), but most of their time is spent complaining about the “lack of freedom” in college.
I am writing to express my strong concern about the traffic on the IU campus. Many examples might be given in this regard, but the one that I have in mind is the pedestrian crossing on Jordan Avenue and Seventh Street by the Jordan stream, close to the exit from the parking garage. Many drivers act as if this pedestrian crossing were not there.
I wanted to commend columnist Ayesha Awan for her column on Wednesday, “Facebook Activism?” She is absolutely right. If someone cares about an issue, be it Barack Obama’s presidential campaign or the right to habeas corpus, it is not enough to join a Facebook group espousing this belief. In the age of the Internet, it is all too common that people believe their Facebook profiles speak for them enough.
The proposed campus-wide smoking ban which will take effect in January is an unworkable and lamentable idea. Certainly, there is reason to be concerned for the health of the student body, and it is understandable why the campus has banned smoking within 30 feet of buildings.
Colin Dugdale’s article that appeared in INside magazine should in fact have been published in the Opinion section of the IDS, as it was a thinly-veiled diatribe bashing a minority of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender community.
It is regrettable that the IDS did not cover the Labor Studies Brown Bag presentation called Outsourcing Jobs at IU on Thursday, Sept. 27. As vice president of the Communications Workers of America Local 4730, I believe that the IDS missed a forum addressing one of the most pressing issues on campus.
