State of the Union

·

At my dinner table this Thanksgiving, there were three conventional Democrats, three people too far left to call themselves Democrats and one socially conservative Republican. Even though the Republican was outnumbered 6-1, the lefties felt uncomfortable when the topic of abortion came up in conversation, and the righty felt attacked. No inflammatory words were exchanged; rather, our Thanksgiving discomfort was caused by all parties’ apprehension and fear of the opposing political abyss. This is not an unusual situation. It is the state of the union.

In God’s country

Richard Roberts, the president of Oral Roberts University, resigned on Friday, amidst accusations that he and his wife misspent university funds and jeopardized the university’s tax-exempt status with fundraising efforts for a Republican candidate. Roberts is the son of school founder and well-known evangelist Oral Roberts, and although ORU’s strict dress code and morals have loosened over the years, students are still required to sign an honor code.

Cracked cosmos

·

Apparently, we’re doomed… Again. And this time it’s the astrophysicists’ fault. On Wednesday, the London Telegraph reported that in an upcoming article in New Scientist, physicists Lawrence Krauss and James Dent claim that by observing evidence of dark matter in a 1998 project measuring the light from supernova, scientists might have shortened the lifespan of the universe.

My favorite things

·

Every year, Oprah reveals “My Favorite Things,” a list of what she believes are the best products and gift ideas around. This is always her most popular show, as the lucky guests all receive some of her favorite things. This year especially, a lucky group of Macon, Ga., residents seemed quite hysterical when they received these offerings from O herself.

Gordon shines as Hoosiers improve to 3-0

·

For the first four minutes of Tuesday’s game, the No. 8 IU men’s basketball team looked like it would be in for a battle against the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Believing in 13

·

Somewhere, Terry Hoeppner is smiling. Whether he saw the game will forever be unknown, but what happened at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night vindicated a program that has not gone to a bowl game since 1993. A 27-24 victory over Purdue (7-5, 3-5) to win the Old Oaken Bucket and most likely take IU to a bowl game did more than just satisfy the Hoosier football team.

·

A few hours before the football game on Nov. 17, 35 cyclists from IU and Purdue finished their 122-mile ride from West Lafayette to Bloomington. The riders enjoyed a tailgate celebrating the end of the second annual Bucket 100 Bike Tour, which raised more than $5,000 for Habitat for Humanity.
