While school was out of session for the summer and students headed home to relax, Residential Programs and Services worked hard to make several renovations to campus housing facilities.
IU is looking to add a new school color to the original cream and crimson – green. The effort to go green on campus is being made more simple with Indiana Sustainable Student, a newly released guide to help students become more environmentally aware and do their part while living on campus.
Many students are stressed out this week about chemistry or calculus, but this evening there will be a much easier class: a crash course in shopping. From 5 to 9 p.m. at College Mall there will be free food and prizes ranging from a gift certificate to Blondie’s Cookies and free Chick-fil-A for a year, to the grand prize of the Target Ultimate Dorm Room.
I’m writing this with the slimmest of hope that Lupe Fiasco himself might get a chance to hear what I have to say about the show I just saw at Indiana University in Bloomington.
2008 proffered an unusually harsh spring in Indiana, and I think we both know I’m not talking about the freeze that didn’t lift til May. No, Hoosier nation was in a well-documented tailspin that began slowly last October and took off like a bell curve in April.Such was the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of Crean.Guess what, kids? It’s not summer anymore.Sure, the solstice technically comes Sept. 22. But summer ends on Labor Day, and the IU basketball team’s era of good feelings came to a halt this afternoon with the announcement of the Big Ten schedule, soon followed by IU’s own 2008-2009 slate.
As many newspapers are reporting, including the Indiana Daily Student, it is well known that John McCain chose Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate in the hopes that women and some democrats would vote for her just because she is a woman. This is why I feel a need to write about this. I am hurt and scared for the women of this country because I am now realizing the type of world we live in. For so long white men have run this country and have been in charge of the rights of the people, especially of women. So to assume that women are too stupid to look beyond their own gender is appalling. We are supposedly living in a world where women and men are equal; however, what is happening in 2008 only proves that this is not the case.
South Korea said Wednesday that North Korea had begun restoring its nuclear facilities. But the U.S. played it down, saying the country apparently only moved some equipment out of storage.
I would like to respond to your Sept. 2 editorial regarding the 37.4 mile “Walk for Workers” I completed through my district this past Saturday. While I respect the editorial board’s opinion, I must strongly disagree with their take on my motives. After walking 37 miles in honor of the working men and women of my district affected by job loss, I can say with certitude that this was no “stunt.” I would also state that anyone there during the more than 12 hours I spent on my feet would say the same – especially those affected by these job cuts in recent months.
Sunday’s season opener is going to be different for Peyton Manning. He’s playing in a new building, will take snaps from a new center and finds himself behind two new guards. The two-time league MVP can handle all those changes. It’s the other stuff he can’t answer yet.
Road construction has plagued Bloomington for several months now – for more than a year near Walnut Street and First Street – causing traffic jams and leading drivers to take alternate routes.
Summer is over now, and it is time to reflect on all the cook-outs we went to, how many times we heard “American Boy” on the radio and how much the weather sucks now that we have to bear the intense humidity while walking to class.
Considering the fact that I am an IU freshman, I thought it would be best to attend the annual CultureFest. The program discussed the obvious diversity that Bloomington possesses, and I walked away with the understanding that variety would be right around the corner. Therefore, I was extremely disappointed when I picked up my first official copy of the Indiana Daily Student. I assumed that diversity included political diversity. However, the opinion section was quite the opposite.
Voices and tunes that evoke bygone eras will ring out at Upland Brewing Company on Saturday to help keep southern Indiana green.
