Faculty member dies

The IU community has lost an esteemed alumnus and faculty member. George Sullivan, the theater department's director of audience development, was found dead at his home on North Park Avenue in the early evening of March 5. Monroe County Coroner Dave Toumey pronounced Sullivan dead at the scene, ruling the death an apparent suicide.

O'Bannon to make cuts

Indiana lawmakers ended this session of the General Assembly Thursday with no answers for the state's budget shortfall. Facing an unresolved $1.3 billion deficit, Governor Frank O'Bannon will now be forced to begin making cuts in spending beginning this week. Education, the largest chunk of the budget, will not be spared. For IU, the cuts may mean a tuition increase and more administrative slashing.

States seek Microsoft penalties

WASHINGTON -- Monday, nine states asked a judge to impose tougher penalties against Microsoft, citing internal memos as evidence the software giant had persisted in thwarting competitors even as it was being found guilty of antitrust violations. The states asked U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly to force Microsoft to create a stripped-down version of its flagship Windows software that could incorporate competitors' features and to divulge the blueprints for its Internet Explorer browser.

Mideast talks point to possible truce

JERUSALEM -- Israeli troops pulled out of biblical Bethlehem and a neighboring village early Tuesday, witnesses said, edging Israel and the Palestinians closer to a cease-fire in the 18-month-old Mideast conflict. The pullback came during a visit by Vice President Dick Cheney, winding up a tour of the region that concentrated on the U.S.-led campaign against world terrorism. Concerned that Palestinian-Israeli violence would disrupt the effort, Cheney called on both sides to end their conflict.

Hip Hop Congress rocks IU, expresses opinions in hopes of world change

The process of forming an organization at IU is as simple as filling out a listing card with the Student Activities Office. Over 400 student organizations are listed with the office annually. One of these organizations is the Hip Hop Congress. Five chapters now exist in the U.S. as well as several delegate or seed groups on six continents. Senior Ron Gubitz, one of the founders of the national organization, was responsible for creating the IU chapter.

Professor preserves the past

Stepping into Geoff Conrad's office is like taking a step into the past. Ancient Indian artifacts cover the walls, a stone gargoyle perches on his desk and an Aztec stone figure, painted and adorned according to tradition by Professor Conrad himself, stands guard in the corner. "I like to think I'm keeping the tradition alive," Conrad said of the cast of the ancient statue, which was decorated differently during various ancient Aztec festivals. Director of IU's Mathers Museum and professor in the department of anthropology, Conrad spends most of his time relaying information about these traditions and ancient cultures to students and the Bloomington community.

Cinergy is warning customers to beware of anyone claiming to be an electric company employee who asks to enter their homes. The company received a report March 8 that a thin, white man in his late twenties asked a Franklin resident to enter his home to check the fuse box. The man was carrying a pocket badge that included his name and the word, "Cinergy." The resident called Cinergy to ask about the man, but when he returned the man had disappeared. Valid Cinergy badges include a photo, the company logo, name, date and employee ID number, said Sharon Acton, Franklin district manager.

Burglar arrested at Walnut Knolls Apartments

After repeated burglaries at the Walnut Knolls Apartments, police have arrested one suspect and are still looking for another. Brian Recker, 19, of Carmel, was arrested Sunday and charged with two counts of possession of stolen property, two charges of burglary and theft, according to jail officials. Bloomington Police Department Captain Joe Qualters described the following incident: A resident of Walnut Knolls returned from spring break to find an amplifier, guitar and a stereo missing.

Local man arrested for attempted murder

Police arrested a Bloomington man Thursday for attempted murder on the 900 block of N. Jackson Street. Timothy Shawn Collins, 47, was booked Thursday and charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, said jail officials.

Local and national progressive news sources go into hiding

After 20 years, Pacifica Network News, a progressive national news program, stopped broadcasting in February, citing financial problems. The Bloomington Independent, a local alternative newspaper, remains on hiatus since it stopped producing in January, also for financial reasons. Loss of both the Independent and PNN hamper robust local and national debates over many important issues.

Senate Democrats killed nomination, democracy dies

It is appalling to witness elected officials abuse our nation's democracy. Our country is fortunate in that we have judges who promote justice throughout the country. Women who commit crimes

In seventh grade, my two friends and I were detained by mall security for stealing a $4.50 pair of earrings from the Limited. I had over 20 dollars in my pocket at the time and I was at the lucky age when my parents thought it was "cute" that I liked to go to the mall with my other friends, with our newly pierced ears and budding interests in the opposite sex. I had no reason to steal. It just seemed so easy and so cool, so I did it that once and after a talk with a counselor at the jailhouse, whose name my mom still yells at me when I am in trouble so many years later, the crime was completed.

University should buy Von Lee

The Von Lee Theater has lain dormant for close to two years now, but an initiative by local community action group Bloomingvision might be able to breathe life into the historic building once again. Bloomington resident Chris Sturbaum and members of Bloomingvision are scheduled to meet Chancellor Sharon Brehm Tuesday to discuss the possibility of the University purchasing the Von Lee Theater from Kerasotes. We applaud any interest the University has in the theater and urge it to pursue the purchase of the property.

'Producers' stars leave the stage

NEW YORK -- Goodbye to Broadway's original Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom. After nearly a year's run, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick left "The Producers" on Sunday, turning over the starring roles in Broadway's biggest hit in years to English actor Henry Goodman and television star Steven Weber.
