Last February, many of the top people in college sports gathered for the Sportsmanship and Fan Behavioral Summit to discuss an all-too-common occurrence -- rioting among college students. The discussions were long and the results unsurprising. In the end, the NCAA pointed the finger at the usual suspect -- alcohol.

The IU women's golf team posted a fifth place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational in Columbus, Ohio this weekend. The Hoosiers never moved out of the top five and have now placed fifth or better at the Lady Northern in 20 or their 21 tournament appearances.

Hoosiers start conference season with upset

IU has opened the Big Ten portion of its schedule in a fashion not seen since 1997. After upsetting the No. 18-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday night in straight sets, the team carried their success over to Saturday with another straight-set win over Iowa to push their winning streak to five consecutive matches.

IU's field hockey team opened their Big Ten schedule in disappointing fashion, falling to 8th-ranked Michigan State 6-0 Friday night at the Mellencamp Pavilion.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Peyton Manning visited his hometown Sunday night and humiliated his dad's old team. Manning became the first NFL quarterback in more than a decade to throw six touchdown passes, leading the Indianapolis Colts past the New Orleans Saints 55-21.

Bad weather cancels game with IU leading

Going into the weekend, the men's soccer team had one win in its past seven matches and was looking for its first Big Ten victory against Penn State. But the IU team (2-3-3, 0-0-1) did not get its wish Friday at Armstrong Stadium.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Schumacher is the U.S. Grand Prix champion again. Now he has to wait two weeks for a chance at a record sixth Formula One title. Schumacher took the lead for good after his final pit stop with 25 laps remaining and pulled away to win the U.S. Grand Prix by 18.2 seconds over pole-sitter Kimi Raikkonen Sunday.

Binge drinking linked to genetics

A recent study from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism finds that a link exists between binge drinking and an individual's genetics. But Dr. Paolo B. DePetrillo, co-author of the study, said atmosphere and environment are also important factors in binge drinking.

In all reality, I should be running through the Arboretum naked right now. That's the promise that I made, should IU have beaten the Wolverines at the Big House on Saturday. And if you looked at the faces of any Michigan fan leaving the game, you would have sworn they had just seen the demise of their team.

Students unhappy after peeping cases

Two IU students who have reported a rash of peeping tom incidents are upset their landlord won't let them out of their lease after police advised they leave their off-campus apartment. Juniors Jami Bennett and Maria Long are living at Lincoln Hill Apartments, 544 S. Lincoln Ave. The two said they have reported a "peeping tom" outside of their living room window seven times since last September.

IU President Adam Herbert loves sports. He held season tickets for the Miami Heat and the Jacksonville Jaguars when he lived in Florida, and he's even made trips to the Super Bowl and Final Four. But for Herbert, academics still come first at the University level.

IU's offense can't get going in loss

ANN ARBOR. Mich. -- In practice leading up to IU's game at Michigan Saturday, coach Gerry DiNardo challenged his cornerbacks. He told them whoever had the most interceptions would start the game against the Wolverines. That turnover mentality carried over, as IU had two picks and two forced fumbles in the first half against Michigan. Unfortunately for the Hoosiers, the offense couldn't capitalize on any of those opportunities. IU lost 31-17 in a lackluster offensive performance, despite a number of chances.

Islamic democracy discussed in weekend's lectures

The 32nd annual Association of Muslim Social Scientists conference met this weekend in Bloomington to discuss the topic "East Meets West: Understanding the Muslim Presence in Europe and North America." During his opening remarks, Dean of International Programs Patrick O'Meara said the focus of the conference was "Islam in the context of democracy."
