Iraqi bombing suspect arrested

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Iraqi security forces have arrested the "most lethal" top lieutenant of al-Qaida's leader in Iraq -- a man allegedly behind most of the car bombings in Baghdad since the U.S.-led invasion, including the 2003 assault on U.N. headquarters that killed 22 people, the prime minister's office said Monday.

Contact uses variety of dance styles

Ivy Tech student to face deportation

An Ivy Tech student will be deported home to Pakistan after it was discovered he was an illegal immigrant with a lengthy criminal record, according to the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement division. Mohammed Alam, 20, resident of the Varsity Villas, was arrested Jan. 14 for public intoxication. Because of his suspicious behavior, officers patted him down and found more than five different forms of identification in his wallet.

Journalism dean search narrowed to 3 candidates

The committee hunting for someone to fill the shoes of retiring IU School of Journalism Dean Trevor Brown has narrowed its search down to three. Again. After a committee failed to reach a consensus on a single candidate in the spring of 2004, a new committee, chaired by Associate Dean of Journalism Graduate Studies Dan Drew, announced its three new finalists Friday.

Athletics fee renewal up for debate

With less than a year since the battle between the students and the administration over the controversial implementation of the $30 student athletics fee, the process to renew the fee is about to begin. Opposed by many student groups, the fee brought $1,134,630 to the athletics department riddled by a deficit amounting to more than $5 million. Whether or not the fee will be renewed is not the only question during the renewal process.

A tale of TWO Halves

In the first half, IU relied on freshman D.J. White for its offensive production. In the second half, the Hoosiers had to look elsewhere with White sitting out more than 11 minutes with cramps. But IU found another way to win in gutting out a 67-60 victory against Ohio State. That other way was junior guard Bracey Wright, who after scoring only five first-half points exploded in the second for 18 points and two crucial assists resulting in dunks by Pat Ewing Jr. and White, who reentered the game with 2:12 to go after sitting for several minutes.

Hoeppner keeps piling up recruits before Feb. 2 deadline

All-Americans step up to beat OSU, Purdue

On the strength of an array of impressive performances, IU put Big Ten indoor track squads on notice Saturday afternoon with a victory over conference rivals Ohio State and Purdue. The Hoosiers scored 128 points to best the Boilermakers' 92 and the Buckeyes' 87 points.

A whole new ball game

Saturday night ended with Bracey Wright as the hero. But it didn't start like that. Fans were heckling the junior guard to stop shooting and pass the ball after he made one of six shots and ended the first 20 minutes with five points. But as coaches say, the second half is a whole new ball game.

Students team up to strengthen careers

Three and a half years ago, Eddie Anderson was in pursuit of a dream. He came to IU in hopes that the renowned Kelley School of Business would have the resources to help him penetrate beyond the iron-cast gates surrounding the frenzy of the entertainment industry. With frustration seeping in as question after question went unanswered, Anderson finally got his answer -- the Business Careers in Entertainment Club.

Vice president to leave IU for Clarian Health

Another University administrator is flying the coup. IU Vice President of Public Affairs and Governmental Relations Bill Stephan will vacate his IU post for a similar one at Clarian Health Partners. Stephan said his new job will begins the first week of March. "I was not planning to leave IU, but then Clarian contacted me," Stephan said. "They recruited me pretty aggressively, and I found that this opportunity was in my family's best interest and mine personally."

Student, faculty input helps narrow dean search field

As the search to replace School of Journalism Dean Trevor Brown inches closer to a decision, faculty and students have begun expressing their expectations for whoever is chosen to replace him. "It will be difficult for anybody to follow Trevor," said journalism professor Betsi Grabe. "I think he's been an amazing dean and he's really put the school first, above and beyond his personal interest.

Streak stays alive as IU downs Purdue

This Saturday, not only did the Hoosiers extend their win streak to five meets, but also five straights wins over No. 19 Purdue in dual meets. The No. 24 IU Women's Swimming and Diving team took on its in-state rival in West Lafayette, sinking the Boilermakers 157-141.

IU just 1 event short of beating Michigan

Confidence comes in many different forms for the No. 13-ranked IU men's swimming and diving team. The Hoosiers came up one event short of sweeping the weekend's meets against Michigan State and No. 8-ranked Michigan.
