James Brown's death sparks emotion from campus groups

·

On Christmas Day, people all over the world mourned the death of entertainer James Brown. "The Godfather of Soul" died at 73 of congestive heart failure after being hospitalized with pneumonia in Atlanta. He left behind five decades' worth of soul and funk, and his death occurred just three months after his September performance at the IU Auditorium.

Fashion hookers and retail pimps

·

Lately, big-time designers have been whoring themselves out to the mass consumer market. But I mean "whoring" in a respectable way -- think less of the stiletto boot-sporting streetwalker type and more of the Chanel-sporting "lady of the night" type. But everyone knows a ho ain't complete without her pimp. In this case H&M and Target are the backers behind this slutty endeavor. And now they're rolling on 20-inch rims (big pimpin', spending G's).

Making it work: Program adjusts to increased interest

·

Fabric surrounds Justin Stutzman. A fifth-year senior, Stutzman is one of six students in IU's individualized major program in fashion design. The runway show for his senior line isn't until March 24, but he works tirelessly, as if it's tomorrow. It's hard to succeed in the fashion industry, he says, and with a recent flood of "wannabe" designers applying to fashion schools, including IU, it's only going to get harder.

A survey of 12- to 17-year-olds provides some of the first independent numbers on social networking for that age group -- and found that older girls, in particular, are the most likely to have used social-networking sites, such as MySpace or Facebook.

Mad props to Britney

·

She's outrageous when she's at a party. She's outrageous when she moves her body. She's outrageous in her sexy jeans. She's outrageous when she's on the scene.

Reflections on diversity

·

As I travel across Indiana and the country, I am frequently asked, "What is going on at Indiana? What happened to the University's commitment to diversity and equity?" Of course, as one who has held a senior leadership position at IU for more than two decades on three separate occasions, I do my utmost to convey a balanced and positive reply. Yet despite my best efforts and the University's historic leadership role with respect to diversity, many of the questioners appear perplexed or not fully convinced of the University's continuing commitment to diversity.

Blurring the lines in Baghdad

Every once in a while there are those bafflingly egotistical people who think they can will things into existence (or nonexistence).

Domestic drinking

·

Winter break for many students and faculty was a time of relaxation and mellow visits with family and old friends. Seized by holiday spirit, some took the opportunity to spread joy and cheer in their respective communities or assist at various charitable events. But not all.

New year, new hope

·

As we head back to Bloomington and begin a new semester, I cannot help but reflect on those we lost this holiday season. The passings of James Brown and former President Gerald Ford are a great loss to the world.

Knight wins record 880, but remains denied of IU fame

·

Jilted former IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight won his historic 880th game Monday, but he remains an outsider at the IU Athletics Hall of Fame. The University's hall includes some of the country's best former college basketball players like Kent Benson and Calbert Cheaney and IU's original championship-winning coach Branch McCracken, among many others.

Michigan State defeats Hoosiers again

·

It wasn't a blowout, but for the second time in less than two weeks Michigan State defeated the IU women's basketball team, this time in Bloomington. The Hoosiers blew a three-point lead late in regulation and lost 64-56 in overtime against the No. 19 Spartans.
