Former Beta Theta Pi house to become Informatics office

Next to the School of Informatics building on 10th Street is a boarded up house with greek history behind it. But soon, the building will gain a new history similar to the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority and the Delta Tau Delta fraternity houses’ transformations to the School of Informatics and the Army ROTC house at 814 E. Third St. , respectively.

Hoosiers complete season sweep of Illini with victory

The IU women’s basketball team is not scheduled to play Illinois again for the rest of the regular season. But when the two teams face off again next season, the Fighting Illini now know they have their work cut out for them. The Hoosiers defeated the Illini 81-68 at Assembly Hall to earn their first sweep of a Big Ten opponent this season.

8 U.S. troops killed, another 14 injured in helicopter crash in Afghanistan

A U.S. helicopter suffered a “sudden, unexplained loss of power” and crashed Sunday in southeastern Afghanistan, killing eight American troops, the military said. Fourteen people on board survived. A NATO spokesman denied the helicopter had been shot down, saying the pilot had radioed ahead to report engine problems. It was the deadliest U.S. crash in Afghanistan since last May. The CH-47 Chinook helicopter was carrying 22 U.S. service members under overcast skies when there was a “sudden, unexplained loss of power and control and crashed,” U.S. military spokesman Lt. Col. David Accetta said. The 14 survivors suffered injuries.

Student play features music of Foo Fighters

After three years, senior Codey Girten finally saw his musical take the stage of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater last week. “February Stars: The Foosical” is a college love story based on the music of alternative rock band the Foo Fighters. Girten, the director, created the rock musical for his senior project as part of the Individualized Major Program. “There hasn’t been a single part of the process that’s been a downer,” Girten said. The Brewskies, a cover band from Louisville, Ky., performed the songs. The band attracted quite a few hard-core Brewskies fans that came up from Louisville just to watch them perform.

Science museum hosts juggling workshop

As the snow came down Saturday afternoon, a dozen people attended a juggling workshop at the WonderLab Museum of Heath, Science and Technology in Bloomington. The workshop was intended for participants to gain basic juggling skills and learn the physics of juggling.

Crossing international boundaries

Tired soldiers formed a distinct sight at Camp Atterbury’s Range 13, as part of the German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency on Sunday. They marched for five hours in battle dress uniform and safety gear, carrying at least 15 pounds per person. The award is given out by the German armed forces to ROTC participants who had to complete a set of qualifications during the two-day competition.

Peanut butter recalled throughout state

Indiana has 13 confirmed cases of a salmonella outbreak associated with certain batches of Peter Pan-brand peanut butter and Wal-Mart’s Great Value house brand, state health officials said. State epidemiologists did not specify which counties have confirmed cases, “but they are spread across the state,” said Eric Deckers, spokesman for the Indiana State Department of Health.
