When former Sen. Fred Thompson dropped out of the Republican presidential primary this past Tuesday, I hardly shed tears over his departure from the circle of White House hopefuls. Nonetheless, the death of another second-tier candidate’s campaign does speak to the exclusive nature of the American political scene.

Slap-happy frats

When it was first announced that Alpha Epsilon Pi, an IU fraternity, was being kicked off campus for hazing, public response seemed to be that it was both shocking and unremarkable. Yes, hazing exists and is generally agreed to be bad, but it is safe to say every fraternity has some sort of hazing. It’s like seeing someone pulled over on the side of the road for speeding — everyone breaks the limit, but you’re not accused unless you show flagrant disregard.

2,000 tickets sold for PRIDE festival

It only took 15 minutes for the staff of the volunteer steering committee to transform the Buskirk-Chumley Theater into a carnival-style dance party. The dance party, which lasted well into the morning, concluded the three-day PRIDE Film Festival.

Indiana man arrested on 2 felony counts

A Bloomington man was arrested on two felony counts after fighting with an officer and striking him with brass knuckles around 9 p.m. Saturday night near the Old State Road 37 and North Walnut Street intersection.

WonderLab visitors explore the center’s new “Nature’s Numbers” exhibit Saturday morning. The exhibit, which opened Jan. 25, contains 20 interactive stations which feature the various patterns and shapes found in living things.

Hoosiers look to join elite company

D.J. White, Eric Gordon and Co.’s, most recent victory, a 65-43 drubbing of Iowa on Wednesday, put the IU men’s basketball team in elite company. The last time the Hoosiers had a start this good, they won the national title.

Fraternity kicked off campus for hazing

IU announced Wednesday that the Beta Iota chapter of Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity will be closed for two years after the University discovered the fraternity violated a hazing policy.

‘Off-the-record’ speech raises concerns

Following a dispute Tuesday evening between members of the Student Alliance for National Security and the Indiana Daily Student regarding a request for a public speech by former government official Meghan O’Sullivan to be off-the-record, First Amendment experts and lawyers nationwide called O’Sullivan’s request questionable. But the event’s organizers said this was an issue of professionalism, not media rights.

IUPD Academy looks to recruit new cadets

As a fight breaks out at the School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, cadet Jill Spencer runs to the scene to break it up and call for reinforcements. Spencer is one of 25 cadets in this year’s IU Police Department academy. The cadets are not only officers-in-training with a work schedule between 12 to 20 hours a week, but they are also full-time students.

Bat Attack

Terri Warne used to be terrified of bats – until she learned the truth. Warne has more than gotten over her fear. She is now the director of Bat World South Indy, one of several bat sanctuaries serving southern Indiana that are responsible for the care and release of injured and abandoned bats.

Power outage scheduled for Saturday

The IU Physical Plant will shut down power in multiple buildings on campus from 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Saturday. The IU Auditorium, Lilly Library, Woodburn Hall, Ernie Pyle Hall, Bryan House and Collins Living-Learning Center will lose power.
