Whether you’re just in town for a visit or live here full time, it’s important to know Bloomington is home to a thriving live music and arts scene, with plenty of options for performances from national acts and local bands to enjoy.
No matter the genre or style of performance you’re looking for, these venues in Bloomington will have something for everyone.
Buskirk-Chumley Theater
The historic Buskirk-Chumley Theater is located in the center of Bloomington at 114 E. Kirkwood Ave. and has been operating since 1922. Originally a movie theater, the venue now operates as a performing arts center, hosting an array of musical and theatrical performances each year.
The theater acts as the primary venue for several annual performance events in Bloomington, including the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival and shows by Indiana University’s African American Arts Institute. The space regularly features community events as well as university-affiliated productions, making it a highly active music hub in town.
Next month you can catch “Kalimba: The Spirit of Earth, Wind, and Fire,” a tribute to the genre-bending group, on Sept. 24. Information about this event and more is available on the theater’s website.
The Bluebird
If a nightclub is more of your scene, look no further than The Bluebird at 216 N. Walnut St. In its 53-year history, the venue has transformed from a bar and deli to a full-on live-music venue and staple in Bloomington.
The venue has hosted performers from a variety of genres, including iconic names such as Zach Bryan and Ween as well as local bands such as Six Foot Blonde. The Bluebird is a thriving spot for IU students and Bloomington residents 21 and older to catch live music performances. IU Auditorium
The IU Auditorium is located in the heart of campus at 1211 E. Seventh St. and is a prime spot for musical performances near IU student housing. With 3,200 seats, the auditorium is one of the largest performing arts venues in Bloomington and according to the university's 2025 report, brought in over 100,000 visitors during the year. The venue also often offers discounted tickets for IU students.
On Sept. 12 and 13, you can catch “Disney’s Frozen in Concert” at the auditorium with the score performed by IU’s Philharmonic Orchestra. Later that month, the musical “Waitress” will be performed live at the auditorium on Sept. 29 and 30.
The Bishop Bar
Located two blocks off Bloomington’s downtown square at 123 S. Walnut St., The Bishop Bar hosts anything from live music performances and DJs to the occasional karaoke and stand-up comedy event.

826 Shows & Tiny Garage
As independent music platforms that host local bands, 826 Shows and Tiny Garage both offer an alternative to traditional music venues. The performers include rock, bluegrass, indie, electronic and folk acts from across Indiana in a house show setting.

Lotus World Music & Arts Festival
Hosted in downtown Bloomington every year, the Lotus World Music & Arts Festival showcases dozens of global musical acts across a weekend of performances. This year the festival will take place from Oct. 1-4 and will consist of over 20 musical acts from around the world.
Outside of the festival, the Lotus Education & Arts Foundation presents events year round that include parades and concerts with the goal of providing people the opportunity to experience the world’s diverse cultures through art and music.
