Officials review military gay ban

Defense Secretary Robert Gates took the first real steps Tuesday toward lifting the ban on gays serving openly in the military, announcing a yearlong review aimed at answering practical and emotional questions about the effect of lifting the ban and imposing looser standards for enforcing the ban in the meantime.

Laughs mark Bear’s comedy anniversary

Bloomington residents celebrated Comedy Caravan’s 27th anniversary by laughing over political correctness, everyday life and relationships. The stand-up comedy show ended its anniversary weekend with performances by comedians Mark Klein and Josh Copen. There were about 30 people Monday in Bear’s Place.

COVINGTON, Ind. – A Fountain County judge has denied a change of venue request from a western Indiana man accused of videotaping himself having sex acts with children as young as two months old.

Grissom Air Museum loses funds

PERU, Ind. – The museum at Grissom Air Reserve Base in northern Indiana is losing the last of what had been $75,000 a year in state funding.Grissom Air Museum leaders said it will open as scheduled for the season on March 2. The museum’s state funding was cut by 10 percent in 2008 and has been eliminated for this year.Museum board chairman Ron Myers says the funding loss is a serious blow. He said museum leaders expected a reduction in state funding but not a total cutoff.Myers said the museum will have to rely more on admissions and support from members and sponsors to continue operations.The 26-year-old museum has some two dozen aircraft on display at its site along U.S. 31 about midway between South Bend and Indianapolis.

Inspection budget is cut by half

INDIANAPOLIS – The administration of Gov. Mitch Daniels is backing away from a plan to cut half the budget for state inspections of meat processors after complaints that it would drive some plants out of business and hurt small farmers.
