Olympics mascots stir debate

Quatchi, Sumi and Miga: not anime characters, but Olympic mascots. The trio was designed by Vicki Wong and Michael Murphy of Meomi Design, a Vancouver-based business described as “a little design studio dedicated to play, delight and goodness” on its Web site.

Best-selling author, ‘foodie’ to speak Friday

Culinary expertise is arguably a form of art, so it’s only appropriate that one of today’s leading “foodies” will speak tonight in defense of food. Michael Pollan, author of New York Times bestseller “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” and “In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto,” will speak at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the IU Auditorium on the week’s topic, sustainability.

Dancers celebrate bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth on auditorium stage

The auditorium was pitch black and silent. A young woman began to sing softly in the center aisle. She held a flashlight in her hand. A bright beam of light on stage illuminated a hanging circle of veils, and the woman joined her fellow dancers within the circle. With her presence, the performance of the Bill T. Jones Arnie Zane Dance Company began.

RPS housing rates raised, scholarships remain same

Despite tough economic times, Residential Programs and Services continues to spend money to improve and expand residential facilities. On Feb. 19 the board of trustees approved a 4.9 percent rate increase on student housing for the 2010-11 school year.

Alpha Kappa step team shares 1st at nat’l contest

After days of controversy over a white group’s win in a step competition, sponsor Coca-Cola said Thursday the Alpha Kappa Alpha team from IU, whose members are black, would share first place and would also receive the same $100,000 in scholarships that the Zeta Tau Alphas won.

Statewide council forms to discuss economic development

IU has created a University-wide engagement council as part of its “Innovate Indiana” initiative.The council will connect all the campuses and their communities as well as be a forum to discuss regional economic issues. It will have economic development representatives from eight IU campuses in three offices located throughout the state.The council will identify how IU can bring together resources and expertise to improve economic development efforts in the state, said David Gard, executive director of engagement. He added that the first meeting on March 5 will discuss opportunities and challenges at the regional level.Bill Stephan, IU vice president for engagement, will be chairman for the newly created IU Council on Regional Engagement and Economic Development. Members of the council will be appointed by the chancellors of each regional campus.“Innovate Indiana” aims to channel IU’s resources to strengthen the economy and organize activities across the state to connect the state’s business to the country and the world.— MJ Slaby
