Hoosiers roll to victory

Before Saturday's scored meet against Ball State, Cincinnati and Central Michigan, coach Randy Heisler said he needed his athletes to finish where they should. Heisler also said some distance runners needed to steal points from the competitors. The coach got what he wanted, as IU gained a 23.5-point victory against closest competitor Ball State.

Hoosiers cruise to victory in 1st scored meet

The men's track team won nine events, set eight career-bests and had its first NCAA provisional mark met of the outdoor season in route to its first scored team victory. IU finished with a 63-point margin of victory against runner-up Cincinnati, which finished with 117 points. Central Michigan remained a contender with 116 points. Iowa finished with 108 points, and Ball State scored 61 points.

Defense shows signs of improvement in third scrimmage

Football coach Cam Cameron said the Hoosier offensive line is as strong as it ever has been. The Hoosiers return all five starters and Cameron has made some adjustments he believes will boost the Hoosiers' offense. But the offensive line couldn't hold back the defense, which made a strong showing at the team's third scrimmage Saturday. "(The offensive line) is one of the strengths of our team," Cameron said. "Our defensive line is really improved, but the offensive line is really going to be the strength of this team."

Senior wins national freestyle crown

Senior Michael Dixon's career as an IU wrestler ended at the Big Ten Championships March 4 in Evanston, Ill. Dixon lost his final match to Penn State's Bob Jones and finished eighth in the conference finale. In that respect, Evanston wasn't kind to Dixon. But Dixon made sure the eighth-place finish wasn't his last appearance on the Northwestern campus. Instead, with his career as a Big Ten heavyweight complete, he assured himself of yet another chance to strut his skills on another level, and he's not finished yet.

Team splits doubleheader

IU's offense helped them win; then, the Hoosier bats fell silent. The softball team split a doubleheader with Michigan State Friday before falling to Michigan in the second weekend of the Big Ten season. Both IU losses were shutouts, and the Hoosiers managed only six hits in the two defeats.

Spartans terminate IU streak

The women's golf team's string of three consecutive Indiana Invitational crowns came to and end Sunday, as Big Ten rival Michigan State took an 11-stroke victory against runner-up Kent State. IU finished fifth, 21 shots back. The Spartans fired a 295 during Sunday's final round of the three-round competition, the best round by any team by nine strokes. Kent State and Northwestern fired 304.

13,489 degrees to be awarded in May

Thirteen thousand four hundred eighty-nine degrees will be awarded in eight commencement ceremonies on IU's campuses. One thousand six hundred sixty-nine degrees from Purdue University will be awarded on the six campuses where Purdue University also offers classes.

'Candide' humorous, entertaining

Laughter, love and misadventure were the hallmarks of the IU Opera Theater's production of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide" Friday at the Musical Arts Center. The performance featured beautiful music, powerful vocals and a hilarious storyline that made the opera entertaining and unique. The performers seemed to be enjoying themselves onstage, which made the evening enjoyable for the audience.

WIUS sells collection of old vinyl, raises money for charity

Dozens of people lined up Sunday morning outside the State Rooms in the Indiana Memorial Union, many waiting at least an hour for a chance to rummage through hundreds of LPs and find a few albums -- or a few boxes of albums -- to add to their collections. Student radio station WIUS sold off a large portion of its record archive Sunday to raise money for the Middle Way House. The sale, which took place from noon to 6 p.m., raised just under $2,000 for the women's shelter, station manager Cody Leitholt, a junior, said.

Trustees confirm Brehm as new chancellor

INDIANAPOLIS -- Donning a gold IU lapel pin, Ohio University provost Sharon Brehm was unanimously approved as the new Bloomington chancellor by the board of trustees Friday. The board approved IU President Myles Brand's recommendation for Brehm to become the next Bloomington chancellor, replacing Kenneth Gros Louis July 1 when he retires. Brand, who described Brehm as "passionately committed to academic excellence," also officially announced the new chancellor will live in University Chancellor Herman B Wells' former residence.

Wall Street prepares for earnings

This week marks the beginning of a period typically referred to as "earnings season." During this time, companies report quarterly earnings to Wall Street. It is also usually marked with warnings from companies who announce they will make less money than expected. Investors will be interested in not only corporate earnings, but also in the company's earnings guidance for future quarters.

Protesting is your right

I am with the hippies. Everyone needs to get off his or her lazy butt and start protesting. It doesn't even have to be about the environment. We have hundreds of issues to choose from -- pro-life, pro-choice, feminism, chauvinism, police brutality, police congeniality, white power, black power, gray power and so forth. You see, we have something called the Bill of Rights, and it lets you go outside and run your mouth off on any moronic thought that enters your head.

Dishonesty of intent

For many reasons, Lou Michel believes we must "look evil in the eye." But is selling books one of those reasons? "American Terrorist: Timothy McVeigh & The Oklahoma City Bombing," was written by Michel and Dan Herbeck about Timothy McVeigh, the unremorseful killer of 168 people in 1995. The authors of the book have heard criticism by many people, especially the families of the victims and the residents of Oklahoma City, Okla., for giving an exclusive voice to a monster.

Epidemic might affect travel

A recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in Europe is affecting many American students studying abroad in Great Britain and Ireland. Overseas Studies director Richard Stryker said that while no IU programs are being canceled because of the disease, students going to Great Britain or Ireland could be restricted from traveling in rural areas.
