13,489 degrees to be awarded in May

Thirteen thousand four hundred eighty-nine degrees will be awarded in eight commencement ceremonies on IU's campuses. One thousand six hundred sixty-nine degrees from Purdue University will be awarded on the six campuses where Purdue University also offers classes.\nHonorary degree recipients will be:\n• Bloomington: Bloomington Chancellor Kenneth Gros Louis, Doctor of Humane Letters; Jack Gill, a high tech venture capitalist, Doctor of Science; and Raymond Leppard, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra music director, Doctor of Music. Leppard's degree will be conferred at both the IUB and IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis commencement ceremonies. \n• IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis: Dr. Doris Merritt, special assistant to the chancellor for research and graduate education and professor emeritus of pediatrics, Doctor of Science; Dr. George Rawls, a retired Indianapolis surgeon and former assistant dean of the IU School of Medicine, Doctor of Science; and Dr. Daniel Laskin, a distinguished leader in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery, Doctor of Science. \n• IU Northwest: Patricia Ireland, president of the National Organization for Women, Doctor of Laws. \n• IU-Purdue University at Fort Wayne: James Kelley, a civic leader and philanthropist, Doctor of Humane Letters. \n More honorary degree recipients will be announced in the future.\n Commencement ceremonies will begin May 5 in Bloomington. Commencement activities will begin May 4 with the traditional graduation send-off from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at Bryan House. The send-off will be followed by a baccalaureate from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in the IU Auditorium.\nThe Bloomington commencement take place in Memorial Stadium May 5 at 10 a.m. In the event of severe weather, commencement will be held in two sessions in Assembly Hall with the following schedule: at 10 a.m., Kelley School of Business; School of Education; School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation; School of Law; School of Music; School of Public and Environmental Affairs; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas); at 3:30 p.m., College of Arts and Sciences; School of Continuing Studies; School of Journalism; School of Library and Information Science; School of Optometry; and University Graduate School (doctoral candidates in above areas).\nOther campus commencements will be: \n• Southeast -- 6:30 p.m., May 7 in the IU-Southeast Amphitheater near New Albany \n• Kokomo -- 1:30 p.m., May 8 on the IU-Kokomo campus \n• South Bend -- 6 p.m., May 8 in Notre Dame's Joyce Center \n• Fort Wayne -- 7 p.m., May 9 in the Fort Wayne Coliseum \n• Northwest -- 5 p.m., May 10 in the Merrillville Star Plaza Theater \n• East -- 6 p.m., May 11 in Richmond's Tiernan Center \n• Indianapolis -- 3 p.m., May 13 in the RCA Dome.
