Men's track and field team to play host to first scored meet of season

With the past two weekends going unscored as a team, the men's track and field team will play host to its first meet for points at home 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the E.C. Billy Hayes Track. The Hoosiers will face Cinncinati, Ball State, Central Michigan and Iowa in a five-way match.

Men's soccer team falls short in NCAA title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- In today's NCAA College Cup Championship game, the No. 7 University of North Carolina Tar Heels (20-4) upset No. 4 IU (17-4-1) 2-0 at Columbus Crew Stadium. Both teams won emotional semifinal matches on Friday night to battle for the National Championship. UNC, after scoring two goals in 64 seconds to tie No.4 Stanford, won in four overtimes. The Hoosiers followed with a 2-1 double overtime win against No.8 St.John's.

Women's Row 6 faces changes, challenges to compete

After disastrous qualification attempts in past years, Athena is solidly in the field for the 2001 race. The independent team is joined by sorority Alpha Chi Omega and Alpha Phi Omega in Row 6, and all expect to improve on their qualification positions.

Athletics needs more openness

Under the new administration of athletics director Michael McNeely and his media relations director, Jeff Fanter, getting access to department administrators is nearly impossible. All interview requests from the media must go through Fanter, and they are rarely granted.

Blue Moon Revue prepares for release

Local band Blue Moon Revue is gearing up for the release of its first official album this Saturday. Full of original material, Home boasts nine tracks of funkified soul rock. Vocalist and guitarist Matt Marshall, guitarist David Sullivan, bassist Andy Salge, keyboardist and programmer Drew Scalercio, drummer Dan Hirons and Matt Frick on banjo and percussion are all IU students.

'Yoshimi' the usual Lips masterful crafting

Robert Christgau once wrote about the Flaming Lips in his Village Voice "Consumer Guide" that, "these guys are Not Joking. Ever. Which makes them hopelessly ridiculous." Though I don't plan to contend the validity of this comment, Christgau seems to miss the point.

Actor Jack Lemmon dead at 76

LOS ANGELES -- Jack Lemmon, who brought a jittery intensity to his roles as finicky Felix Unger in "The Odd Couple," the boastful Ensign Pulver in "Mr. Roberts" and a cross-dressing musician in "Some Like It Hot," has died. He was 76. The two-time Oscar winner died at a hospital Wednesday night from complications related to cancer, spokesman Warren Cowan said. Lemmon's talents were so broad that of his seven lead-actor Oscar nominations, five were for dramas and two were for comedies.

IU has 'strong showing' at diving competition

The IU women's divers successfully returned to competition in the Indiana Winter Invitational and Dive-Off after five days of intensive training over the semester break. The Hoosiers played host to Iowa State and Purdue for three days of diving to start off the spring championship season. In the three-meter events on Friday, IU junior Sara Reiling and Boilermaker senior Kara Hajek-Gustafson battled it out throughout the day. Hajek-Gustafson edged out Reiling by three points with a total of 518.40 in the collegiate event. Reiling's second place finish led a string of Hoosiers who placed second through seventh. Senior Erin Quinn finished third with a total of 493.90, while juniors Jennifer Sonneborn and Crystal Gregory rounded out the top five.

Decision malicious

I was recently appalled by a malicious decision on the part of the IDS to present what amounts to hate speech in the student newspaper. The fact that it is an advertisement only leads me to the assumption that you endorse this type of ideology even if this is not the case.

Youth looking to lead team in match against Cardinals

IU men's tennis (2-1) could use a victory after a disappointing loss at Louisville. The Hoosiers welcome Ball State (2-1) to the Tennis Center at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Ball St. also lost its last match, falling to No. 6 Illinois. IU holds a remarkable 34-7 all-time record versus in-state rivals. The Hoosiers next four matches will be at home. The home matches are an opportunity to acquire some momentum before conference play begins Feb. 23. "It's real important. We shouldn't lose matches at home," senior Rahman Smiley said. "Away matches are tougher to win." Smiley and senior Milan Rakvica are leading the Hoosiers this season. Smiley is undefeated in both spring singles and doubles matches. He boasts a 9-5 overall singles record and a 7-1 doubles mark this year. Rakvica is 8-5 in overall singles and 6-1 in doubles.

City to build kiosks along Kirkwood

It shouldn't be long before local bands will again be able to post fliers advertising their shows in the downtown area. City officials said they plan to put up kiosks along Kirkwood Avenue by the end of the year. For the past month, the city of Bloomington has enforced a long-standing but obscure ordinance banning the posting of fliers on telephone poles and other public property. The crackdown followed complaints by local merchants that the ubiquitous and often colorful fliers marred the attractiveness of the downtown shopping district.

'Star' still fighting Knight ruling

In the latest chapter of legal maneuvers involving former IU men's basketball coach Bob Knight, The Indianapolis Star has taken to the offense, appealing a ruling that favored IU and withheld the public release of Knight's personnel documents. The Indianapolis Star filed an appeal Monday asking the Indiana Court of Appeals to overturn last month's ruling by Morgan County Special Judge Jane Spencer Craney. If Craney grants the appeal, the records surrounding the termination of Knight would be made public and visible for public scrutiny.

Philipps flows into 'Dawson's Creek'

After several years in the entertainment industry, Busy Philipps has become a familiar face to young audiences. Her big break came in 1999, when she was cast as high school outcast Kim Kelly on the short-lived but critically acclaimed NBC series "Freaks and Geeks." After the show's cancellation, the 22-year-old Philipps won roles in the independent film "The Smokers" and the MTV television movie "Anatomy of a Hate Crime."
