Flora provides satisfying meal

The Sicilian region of Italy has had a long history between other countries in Europe, resulting in an exotic mixture of ingredients in their culinary recipes. If you are looking for a quiet romantic place to experience such delicacies, then venture off campus to Flora, 620 W. 5th St. This moderately priced restaurant features family dishes of pasta, chicken and pizza, all of which will enlighten and delight your taste buds. This restaurant offers a limited amount of appetizers. Nevertheless, most of the entrees come with a small house salad and freshly baked bread directly from the oven. Be sure to add some olive oil and parmesan on your bread to help evoke thoughts of Mediterranean islands.

Comedy à la française brings laughs and entertainment

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane à la française? I think not! "La Cage aux Folles" is the original French adaptation of Jean Poiret's play by the same name. The play and its film version were later tailored to English-speaking (read: American) audiences in the more recent "The Birdcage" with Williams, Nathan Lane, and Gene Hackman. Thursday, an audience of about 10 to 15 students, faculty and staff at Foster International had the opportunity to laugh at the hilarious antics of Renato and Albin, the center of the film's drama. There's a quite simple recipe to this film: take two aging gay men, mix in a 20-year-old man about to get married, and add a pinch of conservatism in the form of his fiancée's family.

It rained on this 'Parade'

After reading Robert Burrows' The Great American Parade I can only draw one conclusion. He thinks I am stupid. I can think of no other explanation for this book. Why else would an author, who presumably writes for the college audience, continually beat me over the head with his mantra: "George W. Bush is the devil." While I did not vote for the Dubya, I certainly do not find it necessary to spout off about how I disagree with his policies or personal life at every opportunity. This politically charged novel certainly held promise, offering a plot about college newspaper staffers fighting a great crusade. However, it quickly degenerated into a repetitive attempt to sway my political beliefs towards the author's.

Carter joins Dolphins

MIAMI -- Cris Carter came out of retirement and out of the broadcast booth Monday to join the Miami Dolphins, signing a one-year contract to bolster their injury-depleted receiving corps. The 36-year-old Carter agreed to a one-year contract with $550,000 guaranteed and $700,000 in incentives.

Knicks suspend Sprewell

NEW YORK -- Latrell Sprewell was suspended by the New York Knicks on Monday for not following the team's instructions for rehabilitating his broken right hand. The disciplinary move came on the same day that Sprewell's agent announced a $40 million lawsuit against the New York Post for its account of how he was injured.

'Goatboy' brings odd brand of humor to IU

Many might know him for his "Goatboy" act or his infamous Joe Pesci impersonation. Others might have seen him on Home Improvement or spotted him in "Half Baked" or "Dick." IU students and Bloomington locals now have the chance to see comedian Jim Breuer on Friday, Nov. 15 at the IU Auditorium as part of his "Lighten Up Comedy Tour" that began in late 2000. Breuer's Bloomington appearance has been over a year in the planning.

Death penalty for minors refused

WASHINGTON -- A bitterly divided Supreme Court refused Monday to consider ending the execution of killers who were under 18 when they committed their crimes. Four justices said the court should continue a reexamination of the death penalty begun in earnest last year. The court recently abolished executions for the mentally retarded.

Man exposes self at dorm

A male exposed himself to a female student outside McNutt Quad early Saturday morning, according to the IU Police Department. An 18-year-old female student reported the indecent exposure to the IUPD at around 4:40 a.m., Sgt. Tim Lewis said. The female saw the suspect as she was approaching the northwest entrance of McNutt Crone from the McNutt Quad parking lot, according to a police report. When she entered the dorm, she turned around to see the suspect was exposing himself and masturbating. The direction the suspect left in is unknown. Lewis said the man did not enter McNutt.

Oncourse gets an overhaul

Some of the 73,000-plus users of Oncourse may have noticed the popular site went offline this morning from midnight to 6 a.m. while it receives replacement hardware. Oncourse, which has been widely adopted by faculty and students, has received additional software every year for the past three years. During the third week of this semester, UITS noticed major slow downs in the system and began making efforts to correct the problem.

Bush signs measure pressuring Sudan

WASHINGTON -- President Bush signed a get-tough-on-Sudan resolution Monday meant to prod the government of Africa's largest nation toward ending a 20-year-old war that has killed some 2 million people. The measure formally condemns human rights violations, alleges the Sudanese government uses food as a weapon and directs the president to impose sanctions against Sudan if he determines its government isn't negotiating in good faith.

North Korea ready to open weapons program dialogue

SEOUL, South Korea -- North Korea said Monday that it was willing to negotiate over its nuclear weapons program if the United States withdraws its "hostile policy" toward the communist country. The comments by Kim Yong Nam, the North's ceremonial head of state, were unlikely to mollify the United States, which has said North Korea's nuclear program is a nonnegotiable issue and must be dismantled immediately.

Police question 2 in sniper shootings

RICHMOND, Va. -- Authorities took two men into custody Monday for questioning in the Washington-area sniper attacks after surrounding a white van parked at a pay phone. Hanover County Sheriff Stuart Cook said the two men were seized about 8:45 a.m. across from an Exxon station in suburban Richmond.

Palestinians and Israelis inflict terror on each other

While sitting at the Royal Café on Kirkwood one afternoon chatting with a girl about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, I brought up the time in mid-July when Israel dropped a one-ton bomb in a crowded Gaza apartment building. This act murdered 15 people, nine of them children, to assassinate one militant. Her explanation for the death of innocent Palestinians claimed that the militant purposely surrounded himself with children. This implies that Palestinians are by nature inhuman, and would simply volunteer their children to be blown up like firecrackers.

Sniper needs a life

I have a message for the serial sniper in Virginia. Who do you think you are? What kind of a sad life have you led up to this point? Don't jump the gun on new laws

After the 1999 high school shooting in Columbine, Colo., the Clinton administration and those in Congress pushed through "ground breaking" gun control laws. Because of the quick reaction of U.S. lawmakers, it was then required to place trigger locks on all new handguns, the age for buying guns was raised from 18 to 21 and the importing of high-capacity ammunition clips became unlawful. To this day, those laws have not been enacted.
