Art students open doors

The Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts Open Studio Event will take place from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday. This will be fifth time the bi-annual event will be held.

Drum ensemble plays new beat

Loud, overwhelming and powerful are the three words to sum up the first selection played by the Percussion Ensemble in Auer Hall Monday night. The ensemble, consisting mostly of drums and xylophones, was an awesome new sound. It was a different and fun type of concert compared to the sounds of a symphony band or orchestra that I was used to hearing.

Located at 312 S. Washington St. are the offices of a Bloomington theater company founded 22 years ago in 1980 by two IU Masters of Fine Arts students Tom Moseman and Jimmie Leonard. The two founded the continually financially troubled arts organizations so there would be another venue for local artists to perform as well as have their work performed.

Sanding the floor in our hearts

Last weekend I downloaded a song. OK, so I pirate music -- get over it. I don't even know who sings the song, I only know the title: "You're the Best Around." You all know this song, and somewhere inside your head you're asking yourself, "How do I know that song?" It's the theme song from "The Karate Kid." The song that's played at the end during the tournament. "You're the Best Around." You know I'm right.

Loaded 'Spidey' discs swing onto DVD

Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" was released amid a sea of buzz this past May, following hot on the heels of Bryan Singer's "X-Men" -- both adapted from popular Marvel Comics. House approves homeland security bill in victory for Bush

WASHINGTON -- The House voted emphatically Wednesday to create a Homeland Security Department, propelling President Bush nearer his goal of answering last year's terrorist attacks with the biggest restructuring of government in half a century. The 299-121 roll call -- and a pair of favorable procedural votes in the Democratic-run Senate -- signaled that lawmakers were ready to award a legislative triumph to a president whose hand was strengthened by Republican victories in last week's congressional elections.

Take Tolkien's journey into your own hands

In a little more than a month, the second film in director Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy will debut, and fans will flock to theaters to take in more of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic story. But luckily, EA Games has already released its first video game based on the movies, allowing gamers to relive and play scenes from the first movie and get a sneak peek at some of the upcoming scenes from the second movie, "The Two Towers."

This Mexican gem, which in English translates to "And Your Mother Too," accounts the sexual goings-on of two immensely different friends. Many cineastes missed this bold masterwork during its limited run in Bloomington this past May, but now that it's available on DVD, filmgoers with more adventurous tastes would be well advised to check it out.

Male student attacked

A 20-year-old male student was reportedly robbed and attacked at knife point near Morrison Hall Monday night. The IU Police Department reported the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. The victim reported he was walking to a class in Morrison Hall from the southside when he was pushed from behind. The unnamed victim said he turned to find two men wearing ski masks demanding money from him.

Indian student group ready for celebration

IU's Indian Student Association is bringing together a flavorful mix of classical and contemporary dances for their annual Diwali celebration this weekend. The Diwali "Festival of Lights" Cultural Show, an annual celebration held each fall, will feature several performances by IU students in addition to a flavorful array of Indian cuisine. Diwali 2002, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Bloomington High School South Auditorium. Admission for the show is free but a $5 donation is suggested.

Students support political parties on campus

A group of eager political spokespeople pass around campaign bumper stickers, make phone calls urging support on key issues, and hold debates to get out the word of candidates. These are not just expensive lobbyists and campaign managers performing these tasks. Many students right here at IU sacrifice their free time in support of their political views.

Heart and soul adds to mood music

Tracy Chapman's Let It Rain, the sixth album in a career that rocketed to prominence in 1988 with a powerful, eponymous debut and spiked again with 1995's bluesy New Beginning, is dark. At least it sounds dark. Dour strings, sparse arrangements and doleful vocals combine to produce an album that, at first listen, sounds almost like a dirge mourning the loss of happiness, or, as suggested in the aptly titled "In the Dark," innocence: "Make my mind unable / To force the body to do its will / Let it be right for belief and denial / To share a space in the heart and leave us only to imagine / About the things some do in the dark."

Still brilliant after all these years

In the liner notes to the new Paul Simon best-of, On My Way, Don't Know Where I'm Goin', writer David Wild credits Simon, along with Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman, for taking American songwriting "to a deeper and more intelligent place." Unfortunately for him, Simon's career has been lower-key than those three. He isn't as weird or respected as Dylan. He isn't as funky, soulful or courageous as Wonder. He isn't as funny as Newman, nor does he have the Oscar telecast as an annual forum like Newman does. Furthermore, he hasn't embraced cheeseball arena-rock aspects as fully as Bruce Springsteen.

Coffee Comfort

It's hard to escape the hustle and bustle of school life around campus. Most students are busy reading, studying and trying to pass classes. But there is one place where students can go to feel secure in this time of demand, a place where they feel comfortable hunched over the books. At Starbucks, winner of the Best Place to Get Coffee, students relax as they fuel their minds with hot coffee to make that A or the next deadline. It is a haven for graduate students who need to feel at home when they haven't closed their books in days.
