Luxury legacy left over

Former athletic director Michael McNeely may be gone. But a $3.5 million piece of his legacy still remains in the form of luxury seats currently being constructed at Memorial Stadium. Following the lead of Big Ten schools such as Ohio State and Penn State, which have already reaped financial benefits with the addition of luxury seats in their stadiums, IU is currently installing eight luxury suites and 300 club-level seats in Memorial Stadium to be ready for the 2003 season.

Country collapses in on bishop

ZIPAQUIRA, Colombia -- The Colombian government pledged an all-out effort Wednesday to find a bishop and prelate kidnapped by suspected rebels earlier this week. The pope "vehemently" called for their release.

NASA finds leak that led to shuttle's delay

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- NASA has found the oxygen leak that delayed space shuttle Endeavour's launch earlier this week, but now is trying to determine whether the ship's robot arm was damaged during inspections.

Wells to fight against charges

Monroe County Councilman Scott Wells faces six charges stemming from a Sept. 27 incident with the Indiana State Police. The six charges consist of battery of a police officer, operating while intoxicated, resisting arrest, failure to wear a seat belt, disorderly conduct and public intoxication. Wells' initial hearing is scheduled for Nov. 25. Wells and his attorneys said they are planning to fight for his innocence. "I think this has been politically motivated from the get go," Wells said. "If they stick this on me, I'm basically done with my teaching, being able to vote and serving as an elected official."

Iraq accepts UN resolution, return of inspectors

UNITED NATIONS -- Facing a tight deadline and the threat of war, Iraq accepted a tough, new U.N. resolution on Wednesday that will return weapons inspectors to the country after nearly four years. Iraq's U.N. ambassador said his country hadn't placed any conditions on the resolution's terms. In an argumentative and sometimes threatening nine-page acceptance letter to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri attacked the United States and Britain, the co-sponsors of the resolution, and called the U.N. action unjust and illegal. But he declared nonetheless that Baghdad would abide by the resolution.

2 Miami-Ohio coaches suspended

OXFORD, Ohio -- Two Miami University assistant football coaches were suspended Wednesday after one was charged with assaulting a fan and another acknowledged damaging a coaches' box at Marshall. Coach Terry Hoeppner apologized Wednesday, saying things got out of control when fans rushed the field following Marshall's last-second 36-34 win over its Mid-American Conference rival.

Michigan shouldn't have a say

Part of being an authority figure is that you have the authority to punish. That's why the notion of the University of Michigan offering to discipline itself for its actions in its men's basketball program related to the actions of booster Ed Martin are ridiculous.

Assistant coach hired for 2003

Men's tennis coach Ken Hydinger announced the hiring of new assistant coach Matthew Pledger on Monday. "Matthew (Pledger) will bring a wide variety of things to our program," Hydinger said. "He has played professionally and he knows what the next level is like. He'll have high expectations."

Senior returning for fifth year

Senior Karie Schlukebir announced this past week that she is coming back next year as a fifth-year senior. Schlukebir was sidelined early in both her freshman and sophomore years because of cancer, but overcame it to become successful on the court.

Sophomore returns to field after serious injury

When sophomore midfielder Danny O'Rourke went down in warm-ups prior to the IU men's soccer game with Northwestern on Oct. 13 it was the first serious injury a Hoosier had suffered this season. IU responded by winning five of their six games without O'Rourke, a starting defensive-minded midfielder, and went on to clinch the regular season Big Ten Championship.

Mavs remain perfect

CLEVELAND -- The Dallas Mavericks are still perfect. Dirk Nowitzki scored 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as Dallas remained the NBA's only unbeaten team, improving to 8-0 with a 103-99 victory Wednesday night over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

First recruit signs

The IU men's basketball team penned its first recruit Wednesday. Jessan Gray-Ashley, 6-foot, 10-inch, 205-pound forward from Davenport, Iowa, signed a national letter of intent to play for the Hoosiers. He had considered Creighton, Alabama State and Indiana State.

Poetry reads like hip-hop concert

Collins offers improv games for students
