Dancing with the Students

The break-out TV hit, "Dancing with the Stars," has given social ballroom dancing a fresh new look, leading many to buy a new pair of dance shoes. Ballroom dancing might be a great way to impress family and friends at weddings, class reunions and other social events, but for those with two left feet, it can be intimidating. The IU ballroom dance club, called Dancesport, offers students the chance to learn the art of ballroom and Latin dancing.

Simon Hall to be finished this year

What has appeared to be a 140,000-square-foot construction site for the past two years is well on its way to a complete transformation. University architects anticipate the transformation into a "modern art version of collegiate Gothic" inspired building this December. The building, known as Simon Hall or the Multidisciplinary Building, will contain additional research facilities and unify the other science buildings on campus.

E-bus times change to reflect realities

Regular patrons of the E Route of the Campus Bus Service might have noticed a change in its weekday schedule since returning from the winter break. The route will now require five to 10 more minutes to complete than it did before the changes. This effort was made to more closely follow published schedule times, said Kent McDaniel, the assistant director of transportation.

Holiday apathy doesn't detract from IU plans

Since 1997, IU has canceled classes on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for what officials call "A day on, not a day off." IU's plan is to have students participate in all the diversity activities planned during the day. The truth is many students will instead spend the day lying in bed catching up on sleep.

'A day on:' MLK Jr. Day full of events

Classes will not meet Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but students still have the opportunity to learn through a week full of activities. Monday kicks off the weeklong celebration of the 20th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as an official holiday. The 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration Committee has organized events under the slogan "Power of One" to encourage positive change that will continue throughout the year.

Valentin seals free throw record as Hoosiers cruise to victory

Senior guard Cyndi Valentin wasted no time putting the NCAA record for consecutive free throws made behind her. With 7:03 remaining in the second half of IU's 69-56 victory over Northwestern Thursday night, Valentin stepped to the charity stripe and promptly made the first of two shots, her 61st consecutive free throw.

Valentin: One up on Shaq and Wilt

The free throw. It's a major emphasis of just about every college and professional basketball coach across the country. But no matter how many 15-foot uncontested shots a coach requires his or her athletes to make before they're allowed to hit the showers after practice, nothing can prepare them for the screaming, sign-waving fans behind the basket at an away game, or the mental or physical fatigue they'll face near the end of the game. Make most of your free throws in a close game and you're likely assured a victory. Miss the front end of two foul shots and your mind starts to worry about missing the next one.

Like a hitter digging into the batter's box, she plants her right foot just behind the free throw line. Once set, the left foot follows. After receiving the ball, she dribbles six times with her left hand. Following the sixth dribble, she places her right index finger over the air insertion hole. Ever so slightly, she bends her knees and then quickly straightens them as her arm extends and the ball smoothly rolls off her fingertips.

Clowns at the circus

The three-ring circus that is the Alito hearings is now well underway (with Arlen Specter as ringmaster and Ted Kennedy as trumpeting bull-elephant), and I had the opportunity to watch some of the introductory statements by the Judiciary Committee members. Senator Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) mentioned something in her statement that caught my attention: She referred to the "bedrock principle of one person, one vote," a principle she accused Alito of disagreeing with.

Race and rumors of race

The modern civil rights movement abolished state-sanctioned racism. This racism was socially tolerated; overt; explicit; discernible by sight, and existed for more than 300 years. When Rosa Parks stood up by sitting down, the law was on her side. The Supreme Court had telegraphed that it now supported efforts to desegregate in Brown v. Board. A 26-year-old graduate student became the voice of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. His leadership in Montgomery propelled Martin Luther King Jr. to the leadership of the modern civil rights movement and his status as an American icon. Park's and King's leadership made Adam Herbert's presidency possible.

Games of chancellor

Blimey, the IUB chancellor search appears to be on the skids yet again. President Adam Herbert suspended the work of the search committee at last Saturday's board of trustees meeting; the professional head-hunting firm was dismissed a month ago; and no candidates appear as close as the three finalists rejected last Halloween (IDS, Jan. 11). Since my generous offers to fill the role continue to go unacknowledged (IDS, Nov. 14, 2005 and Nov. 11, 2003), perhaps I can help by proffering some creative alternatives to the troubled selection process.

IU needs stabilization above all else

IU trustees, we have a problem. After many faculty gripes, you will meet Saturday to discuss the job performance of IU President Adam Herbert and the structure of the IU-Bloomington chancellor, who also happens to be the University-wide senior vice president for academic affairs.
