UPDATE: COAS dean announced

IU officials announced today that Bennett Bertenthal, professor of psychology and computational neuroscience at the University of Chicago will take over as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

ONLINE ONLY: Event benefits cancer patients

More than 400 people showed up to Arts of the Table, a two-day event to raise money for Jill's House. Jill's House, much like Ronald McDonald's house, is a place for adults to stay while their children receive care at the IU Cyclotron Facility, where patients seek radiotherapy treatment for cancer. The house is named after the late Jill Behrman, an IU student who was killed after disappearing May 31, 2000, while riding her bike.

IU announces 2006 Hoosier Presidential Scholars

Paying for college just got a little easier for several incoming IU students. Sixty students recently received IU's 2006 Hoosier Presidential Scholarship and will have anywhere between $6,000 and $12,000 of their college costs covered annually. These students will also receive a free laptop computer and an additional $1,000 to go toward studying abroad beginning their junior year.

High-energy debate

The three candidates for the 9th Congressional District seat debated several issues on the IU campus Thursday night, but the topic that came up repeatedly was energy. Rep. Mike Sodrel, R-9th, Democratic challenger Baron Hill and Libertarian Eric Schansberg agreed America must reduce its dependence on foreign oil but each had different ideas on how to do it. Hill proposed more research into new energy sources such as hydrogen and solar power.

Burn victim's friends hopeful

Electrician Robert Eury, 29, of Bloomington was in Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis Thursday with second- and third-degree burns covering nearly 90 percent of his body. It has been nearly a week since he was critically injured in an electrical blast at the site of the not-yet-complete Super Wal-Mart, where 12,000 volts of electricity created an arc that lit him and two of his co-workers on fire Aug. 26.

Soccer team looks to knock off No. 2

Illinois mulls steriod testing for high schools

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- Chicago Heights Bloom Athletics Director Joe Reda says it's time steroid testing trickles down from big-league and college sports to Illinois high schools, but weeding out cheaters is the least of his worries. "My opinion on cheating or not cheating is that I don't have one. But when kids feel the pressure to alter their bodies at such an impressionable age, it's just not a good situation. It's about health, not competition," said Reda, who heads sports programs at the 3,500-student school.

Thirty-eight shots. One goal. That was the story last weekend for the IU women's soccer team, which dropped two matches in the Wisconsin Tournament against the University of California and Creighton University. Randy Walker's legacy remembered before NW opener
