Pentagon heavily damaged by airplane; officials evacuated

·

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon took a direct, devastating hit from an aircraft, and the enduring symbols of American power were evacuated Tuesday as an apparent terrorist attack quickly spread fear and chaos in the nation's capital. President Bush, in Florida at the time of the attack, canceled plans to return to Washington and was flown aboard Air Force One to the safety of a military installation at Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana. The nerve center of the nation's military burst into flames and a portion of one side of the five-sided structure collapsed when the plane struck in midmorning. Secondary explosions were reported in the aftermath of the attack and great billows of smoke drifted skyward toward the Potomac River and the city beyond.

The article "Student names given to FBI" in Tuesday's edition appears to contain substantial factual errors.

A little turkey recovery

·

During Thanksgiving break, I, like most of my fellow students, did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. It was wonderful. Unfortunately, my resolve to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING has continued into the first few days back from break. Thus, not only did I turn in my Russian history paper two days late, I also did not write a column this week.

Bring back pride to IUSA

Once upon a time, the IU Student Association was a force to be reckoned with. IUSA was a powerful voice on campus that fought zealously for student rights and was able to command respect from the administration. Today, IUSA still struggles to champion student issues, but hopefully the winning ticket of Wednesday's election will be able to bring some of the old fire back to the organization. In 1960, when Thomas Atkins was student body president, he threatened a campuswide protest to pressure the administration into granting students a voting representative on the board of trustees. His request was granted. IUSA has had a hand in pressuring the University to provide day care for students with children. Child care is still provided, but it would be nice to see the association tackle more hard-hitting issues like this, and more often.

Running alerts players

·

The men's basketball team spent nearly as much time lining up on the baseline in preparation to run at Monday's practice as it did doing basketball-related drills. The reason for the running, according to sophomore George Leach? Himself. "I kind of caused that running," Leach said after practice and an individual free-throw shooting workout. "I let my emotions get to me in practice, and I shouldn't have said some things. But it was all about playing hard today and showing our coaches that we are in shape and we can go hard."

Financial aid scarce

·

According to a report conducted by the Indiana Education Policy Center, the difficulty accessing financial assistance for college is being partially overlooked by the U.S. Department of Education, particularly a widening of the gap between low and high-income students. The report, entitled "The Access Challenge: Rethinking the Causes of the New Inequality," accuses the department of not placing enough emphasis on the growing inefficiency of federal Pell Grants.

Budget might delay science building plans

·

IU's planned $60 million multidisciplinary science building, its top capital priority, could be in jeopardy. The budget the state Senate Finance Committee passed Thursday puts a freeze on new construction projects, including IU's proposed science building. Funding for the building was included in the House's version of the budget. Passed through committee 10-5 across party lines, the Senate budget scales back on spending in a number of areas, including higher education. Senate Finance Chairman Larry Borst, R-Greenwood, said it reflects a slowing national economy and dwindling state revenues.

Brehm should take BSU proposals into consideration I am a junior on campus and a member of the Black Student Union. I personally do feel that Chancellor Sharon Brehm should strongly consider the suggestions that Black Student Union has made regarding the murals. I have seen the mural once. 'Harvard Crimson' shows hypocrisy during project

·

When it comes to newspapers, the opinion page in general and the staff editorial specifically stand as the voice of the editors of the newspaper. They must be unbiased in their writing of regular stories, but in columns and editorials a reader really gets the opportunity to see the values and opinions of the writers and editors of the newspaper. Sometimes, though, the actions performed by the staff at a newspaper can speak louder than the words they put on paper.
