No. 5 Hoosiers head to Connecticut for first road trip

Fresh off their first adidas/IU Credit Union Classic tournament victory in four years, the No. 5 Hoosiers head to Storrs, Conn., for their first road test of the season as IU battles two Big East opponents in Georgetown today and No. 22 Connecticut Saturday as part of the UConn Classic. The Hoosiers, (1-0-1) jumped up two spots from No. 7 in the latest NSCAA poll after beating California and finishing in a draw with Alabama-Birmingham last weekend in Bloomington, but face two more dangerous opponents this weekend.

Here's hoping for a miracle

I was hoping by some scheduling quirk we would find out that the Hoosiers would actually be traveling to play Washington University in St. Louis. Apparently, they still have to go to Seattle. This is a bad thing. Granted, Washington didn't look like anything special against Ohio State last week. But let's remember that the Bucks won the national championship. On the other hand, UConn, which dominated IU, is pretty good at women's basketball but doesn't quite have the same track record in football. Washington is also pretty good at home. The team has lost five non-conference home games in the past 20 years, and that includes opponents like Miami. Their quarterback, Cody Pickett, passed for 4,461 yards and 28 touchdowns last year.

Hall boosts 'Skins with late FG LANDOVER, Md. -- John Hall gave the Redskins just what they wanted Thursday night. Hall kicked a 33-yard field goal with 5 seconds to play, giving the Washington Redskins a 16-13 victory over the New York Jets in the NFL's season opener. Hall, one of four Jets free agents signed by the Redskins in the offseason, also made kicks of 50 and 22 yards as each of the so-called JetSkins did his part in a grudge match created by an offseason player tug-of-war. Patrick Ramsey, not the most nimble quarterback in the world, set up the winning score with a 24-yard scramble to New York's 31-yard line. Ladell Betts carried three times for 17 yards to wind down the clock for Hall's attempt.

The schedule isn't getting any easier for IU. A week after falling at Connecticut to open the season, the football team will travel to Seattle to take on the No. 22 Huskies in their home opener Saturday. For a team that lost by 24 points to UConn last week, it's a daunting task. But it's also an opportunity to turn around a disastrous start. Junior quarterback Matt LoVecchio said the chance to put the UConn loss behind them is a motivating factor for the players.

Williams' classic play debuts

Tennessee Williams' plays are classics. "A Streetcar Named Desire", "The Glass Menagerie", and possibly his best-known play, "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", are renowned for their timeless quality, their drama, and their honest portrayal of American life. The Bloomington Area Arts Council and Detour Theatre Company will be presenting "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" as the first show of the season at the John Waldron Arts Center, 122 South Walnut Street. The play takes place in 1950's Mississippi, on Harvey "Big Daddy" Pollitt's 65th birthday.

Universal Music slashing CD prices

Monks stage fund-raiser

Over the course of a year, 10 Drepung Gomang Monks from southern India will cram into a small van together, where they will span about 20 states and several cities. With just enough money for food and essentials, the monks plan to spread their message of peace and compassion around the country, while also hoping to generate funds for their monastery.

Former U.S. representative drops out of governor's race

Republican candidate David McIntosh has announced he will not seek his party's nomination in the upcoming 2004 gubernatorial election. The former U.S. Representative made the announcement Thursday afternoon during a press conference at GOP headquarters in Indianapolis. McIntosh cited growing support for fellow candidate Mitch Daniels, which includes an endorsement from President George Bush, as the main reason behind his decision. Daniels is the former White House budget director. "The team is coalescing around Mitch Daniels and I'm a team player, have always been a team player and I want to be part of the team," McIntosh said during the news conference.

Examining fact and fiction behind Freshman 15

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Yolanda Davis heard about the dreaded phenomenon before heading off to New Orleans for her freshman year at Xavier University and wanted no part of it. Wendy Moses had likewise heard the tales before settling in as a freshman at Emory University in Atlanta but never imagined it would happen to her. The two Fort Worth, Texas, women found themselves face to face with the so-called Freshman 15, the alleged propensity of students to put on up to 15 pounds when they first go off to college. Whether established fact or national folklore remains an open question, but for many of the roughly 1.5 million young people who enter college each fall, the Freshman 15 becomes a living, breathing reality. As a scientifically proven phenomenon, the Freshman 15 has taken its lumps in recent years.

Students deck the walls with classic art

Every year, as IU students face the task of decorating their latest living environment, the IMU Leisure Programs department sponsors a 10-day poster sale with a variety of wall décor at prices less than $10. The sale runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through today in the IMU Georgian Room, just outside the IU Bookstore. Most posters range from $6 to $8 and fall into one of seven categories.

Poynter Center selects Seminar Fellows from IU Richard B. Miller, director of the Poynter Center for the Study of Ethics and American Institutions, announced Wednesday the selection of the Interdisciplinary Poynter Center Seminar Fellows for 2003-2004. This year's selections from IU-Bloomington include: Robert Ivie, professor of communication and culture; Ann Mongoven, assistant professor of religious studies; John H. Stanfield II, professor of African-American and African diaspora studies; Jeffrey Wasserstrom, professor of history and of East Asian languages and cultures; and David C. Williams, John S. Hastings professor of law. The ten seminars, focused this year on "Democracy and Dissent," we will be held at the Poynter Center at a date to be announced.
