No. 1 offense next for struggling team

·

Playing in the Big Ten, it's necessary to bring your 'A' game every week. Last weekend, the Hoosiers fell far short of a passing grade in their 35-6 loss to Ohio State. IU's defense surrendered a season-high 603 yards of total offense to a then-struggling OSU offensive squad that ranked near the bottom of the conference.

Residents pitch in with housing help

·

Few students reside in a house infested with rats. And not too many worry about living in one bedroom with six people. But that doesn't mean they aren't concerned about those who might. With the goal of eliminating poverty housing, the Bloomington community and IU students involved with Habitat for Humanity are determined to remove Monroe County residents from substandard living conditions.

Pumpkins recycled in 'launch'

·

Aside from the usual ghosts and chainsaw massacres, this weekend Bloomington residents might want to keep an eye out for flying pumpkins. The Great Bloomington Pumpkin Launch is giving participants the opportunity to test their pumpkin chucking skills Saturday as a way to recycle left-over pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns. Check-in begins at 11 a.m. and the event starts at noon.

'Merry Widow' an escape

·

For those looking to escape to another time and place, Franz Lehár's "Merry Widow" offers a delightful evening of humor and happiness. It is a simple love story in which the only complication is the stubbornness of some of the characters involved. Nobody dies in this opera, and the resolution is a happy one. Although idealized, it is an escape for the audience to the carefree days of Paris at the turn of the 19th century.

When silly rabbits grow up

·

I'm giving up. While shopping for groceries for the first time this school year, I found myself in a familiar, yet troubling, place: the cereal aisle. Every attempt I've made to be a responsible adult in any facet of my life has manifested itself in the decisions I make in this aisle.

Jordan River Forum

·

Editorial denies Schiavo case justice The staff editorial, "Interfering in family affairs," (IDS, Tuesday) misrepresented and ignored important facts of the case of Terri Schiavo. Mrs. Schiavo is not "in a vegetative state." She is conscious; she responds to voices, obeys commands. She used to be fed by a spoon, and she swallowed on her own. Watch a video of Terri at www.terrisfight.org.

I want to go to Harvard

·

Dear Harvard, I want to go to your school. I am 22 years old and I'm about to graduate from IU with a degree in communication and culture with a minor in music. I don't play an instrument, yet I still have a degree from one of the finest musical institutions in the world. If there's anything that "PCU" taught me, it's that the beauty of college these days is that "you can major in Game Boy if you know how to bullshit."

Brehm gone ... 'in a way'

·

Ah, politics. Chancellor Sharon Brehm has "decided" to step down from her position as chancellor and vice president of academic affairs in order to aid our new president, Adam Herbert, as he wades through the murky waters of administrative restructuring. To many, this comes as a complete surprise. However, Brehm doesn't seem to concur ... "in a way."

Men inching women out of country music awards

·

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The nominees for next week's country music awards are a bit more old school than some predecessors and a lot more brawny. For the first time in some 20 years, male singers took all five slots in both the entertainer of the year and newcomer categories.

You aren't what you wear

·

I was having a phone conversation with a friend the other day. We were bouncing ideas off each other, and he came up with a theory I did not agree with. He said "Scarface" and "The Godfather" have influenced fashion. "Look around," he said. "Everyone wants to be a thug and wear their suits like the ones in the 'Scarface' and 'The Godfather.'"

California wildfires affect Hoosiers

·

The Southern California wildfires made their journey to Indiana this weekend not by flame, but by flight. IU student travelers were stuck in airports across the country as smoke and quick-spreading fires raged from San Diego to San Bernardino, Calif. Many planes arriving and departing from area airports were not allowed to continue their flight paths, thus causing air traffic delays in other areas of the country.
