Lecture to enlighten opposite sex

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus -- or so the saying goes. Many would probably admit to being a bit perplexed by the opposite gender. Who among us hasn't wondered why women flock to the bathroom in herds or why he never seems to call when he says he will? Tonight, students have the opportunity to be enlightened about the goings-on in the brains of their counterparts.

Trustee gives diversity talk

As IU celebrates Women's History Month and the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board, IU trustee Cora Breckenridge spearheaded a lecture Monday focusing on the challenges facing women and minorities. Breckenridge delivered the biannual Neal-Marshall public policy lecture as part of a series sponsored by the School of Public Affairs and Environmental Sciences and the Neal-Marshall Alumni Association.

Star wars remastered

IU Cyclotron Facility scientists John Cameron, Dennis Friesel and Vladimir Derenchuck were walking through the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico last year when they spotted something they would like for their program. That something was a ground-test accelerator, a 40-foot long device used in the Reagan administration's defense program, nicknamed "Star Wars." "It was actually very easy to get," said Cameron, director of the facility.

Wells runs for office

Democrat Scott Wells has decided to make a run at a second 4-year at-large term with the Monroe County Council. The pro-environment councilman was at the forefront of several key changes in Bloomington during his first term, including changing the Monroe County zoning ordinance to help prevent illegal tree-cutting in the Lake Monroe watershed and assisting in implementing reductions in housing density to the ordinances of Lake Monroe & Griffy watersheds, but he said much still needs to be done in the city.

IU a bargain for in-state students I am tired of reading articles that involve students (who coincidentally ALWAYS happen to be Indiana residents) complain about the increase in various fees. This was most recently illustrated in Matt Mattucci's article "On-campus laundry fee considered" (March 9).

IU streaks toward Drake double-dip

After arriving in Bloomington early Monday morning on the red-eye from San Diego, the IU softball team was tired. Team members have no time for rest though, as the Hoosiers face the Drake Bulldogs (13-8) in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon.

Hoosiers look to spring into action

When spring break comes to a close, most students find it hard to return home -- except the Hoosiers. After going 4-2 over spring break, the team is ready to return to the comfortable confines Sembower Field for a game against Indiana Wesleyan. The Wildcats come to Bloomington sporting a 2-9 (0-1 MCC) record. IWU has yet to score more than 10 runs in a game, and its biggest victory came over Brescia University, 9-3.

BPD conducting training at bypass The Bloomington Police Department Critical Incident Response Team is training this week on an IU property at the northwest corner of the State Road 45/46 Bypass and Fee Lane. The training will feature tactics on entering and securing buildings. The training will occur at various times of day and night this week. IU issued a press release urging passersbyers not to be alarmed by the presence of emergency vehicles, as it is all training.

Defending the family

As a nation, we are being forced to address the issue of same-sex marriage. I contend that extending marriage to include same-sex couples would be a foolish departure from the morals that have built our country.

Yes, IUSA does matter

Before spring break, the student body was subjected to a number of negative articles that gave a bleak picture of student government at IU. The Indiana Daily Student reported IUSA rejects election reform because "There's little chance for reform from the inside, as the current administration owes its place to the system as it is today" (March 11).

So it was spring break on Carnival Cruise Lines' "Fun Ship" Inspiration (yes, "Fun Ship" … they don't mess around) and we're drinking and eating caviar and escargot and duck and all that other stuff you only try when you're on a cruise because you've already paid for all of the food … and then (for some reason) I say it: "Fleetwood Mac sucks."

Spring break -- a time for fun in the sun, drinking, dancing and parties rife with debauchery that would make Carson Daly blush. Where was I for spring break 2004? That's right -- Lansing, Michigan. While so many of my peers were living it up in sunnier latitudes, I was visiting my parents in Spartan country and trying to find ways to distract myself from the snowfall.

Threats and promises

Last week Gov. Joe Kernan sent a letter to the presidents of all public universities telling them not to raise tuition more than 4 percent next year.

Volunteer vacation

The alternative Spring Break program, sponsored by the Civic Leadership Development Student Organization of the Kelley School of Business, is a way some students choose to spend their vacation this year. One of the six IU groups sent to various cities across the nation volunteered at Cafe 458, a restaraunt for the homeless in Atlanta. Helping men and women struggling against addiction, mental health problems, and severe physical difficulties, the cafe works to helps clients escape homelessness and become self-sufficient.

Festivus for the rest of us

This afternoon, students will have the unique opportunity to voice their views on tuition and fees in a public forum held by the IU board of trustees. While the forum will take place in Indianapolis, students can attend via teleconference at the School of Education in Room 2140.

College no longer out of question

MILWAUKEE -- Whether she would walk, or even learn to talk, were in doubt, said her mother, Delphine Taft. Over the years, Kathleen needed hours of physical, occupational and speech therapy to get where she is today - a 17-year-old sophomore at Milwaukee's Arrowhead High School. But despite her progress, Kathleen's parents still were surprised when she declared her intention recently to enroll in college.

Australia remains a top place to study

Center to hold talk on stereotypes
