The alternative Spring Break program, sponsored by the Civic Leadership Development Student Organization of the Kelley School of Business, is a way some students choose to spend their vacation this year. One of the six IU groups sent to various cities across the nation volunteered at Cafe 458, a restaraunt for the homeless in Atlanta. \nHelping men and women struggling against addiction, mental health problems, and severe physical difficulties, the cafe works to helps clients escape homelessness and become self-sufficient.\nThrough experiences ranging from organizing the restaraunt and preparing food to waiting and bussing tables, the students gained a newfound appreciation for the far-reaching implications of homelessness. They impacted the comunity served while glimpsing social issues from a variety of perspectives. And though they recieved no formal payment for their efforts, the students involved found reward in knowing they excercised their greatest capabiliy possible -- the power to make a difference.
