Many athletes dream about success at whatever they do. IU junior Elaine Harris said last week she was hoping to follow in former IU golfer Shannon Johnson’s footsteps. Chalk that up as a success. Seven days after scoring her first Big Ten golfer of the week honor, Harris scored her first career individual tournament title at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
Though the fields for the men’s and women’s Little 500 were set Saturday, the biggest story of the day was who didn’t make the race. Defending men’s champion Alpha Tau Omega failed to make the field for the 57th men’s Little 500 after faulting on all three qualification attempts.
Forgive the cliche, but with great power comes great responsibility. In accordance with incoming President Michael McRobbie’s new contract, with a substantial pay-hike comes greater accountability. The walk of shame. Ordering Pizza Express at 3 a.m. and passing out before it arrives. Trying to be the first person to pee on one of those ridiculous $50,000 musical clocks on campus. What do all of these have in common? Well, they were all pretty fun for me last night! Just kidding, there was no way I was going to pass out before I got my cheese bread and ranch. Forget my diet. I stop counting calories when I start losing the ability to count.
WASHINGTON – The Smithsonian Institution’s eight art museums are “drastically underfunded” and have “seldom lived up to their names,” according to an external review released Wednesday. The voluntary review by a panel of seven prominent museum directors gives recommendations to strengthen each museum and is similar to an external examination of the Smithsonian’s science programs in 2003. The review was adopted by the Smithsonian Board of Regents in January, though it was not released until Wednesday.

In the months after the end to their regular season, the IU men’s soccer team has only seen familiar faces on the opposing team bench – their own. After months of scrimmages and practices, this weekend the Hoosiers will be seeing fewer familiar faces – faces that get paid to play the game they all love.
There are many on IU’s campus who excel in academics, and these students and faculty members have a day in which to be honored by the University, Founders Day. Weather permitting, the IU rowing team will get on the water this weekend for its first home scrimmage of the season against Wisconsin.
The spirit of this year’s Little 500 will proceed as it has since its inception in 1951. The riders have and continue to prepare tirelessly for April 20 and 21. Sweat, blood and tears have been shed over hours of self-discipline, and for one team in each respective race, it will pay off in victory. Those who are defeated can hold their heads high in accomplishment of completion.
Last year’s women’s Little 500 race was decided by mere inches. But if you ask any of the women preparing for Saturday’s qualifications, this year’s race could be more of a tossup.
