IU club tennis competes well in Wisconsin

When the IU club tennis team steps onto the court there is no holding back. Unlike years past, the 2007-08 team is finding their strengths early on and becoming a dominant force in the league. Having started this year’s season 10-0, a spot at nationals is becoming a reality rather than a fantasy.

I have options this week. There was Adrian Peterson’s record-breaking performance, there were some amazing, stupid quotes by football players, there were NBA games out the wazoo and there was even some NHL news ... at least, I think there is still an NHL.

David Mamet lampoons writers’ strike

LOS ANGELES – David Mamet found an immediate outlet for his creativity during the Hollywood writers strike. In a cartoon published Tuesday on the op-ed page of the Los Angeles Times, Mamet played the labor dispute for laughs, appearing to lampoon Writers Guild of America strikers.

Beauty of human body is subject of artist’s new exhibit

It is often said that the human body is a beautiful thing, a piece of art in itself. Local artist and IU School of Fine Arts faculty member Tim Kennedy has embraced this mantra through his exhibit, “Figures,” now on display at the Textillery Gallery on the second floor of the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Crude humor finds laughs at Buskirk

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater overflowed with people wanting to see the sold-out Comedians of Comedy show, featuring Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and Doug Benson on Tuesday night. The comedians who had been touring for two weeks visiting various college campuses and cities, closed the tour in Bloomington.

What is Art?

This past Saturday, I spent the day walking around Clinton, Iowa, knocking on doors and talking to the people about election politics. The purpose of this process, called canvassing, is to relate issues that each individual is concerned about to the candidate you are promoting. It sounds cult-like, I know, but the process of bringing politics to people one-on-one has been one of the most crucial elements of winning an election, and, surprisingly enough, has been a fundamental by-product of art throughout the ages.

Pranking ourselves

On Jan. 2, 1961, people around the nation gathered in front of their TVs to watch the live broadcast of the Washington Huskies playing Minnesota’s Golden Gophers in the Rose Bowl. For the half-time show, Washington’s marching band had distributed flip cards to a designated section of Huskies fans that, held up on the cheerleaders’ signal, would cycle through 15 different designs. But when the Huskies fans lifted their cards for the 12th design, the picture looked strangely like a beaver rather than a husky, and the 13th design spelled “huskies” backwards (“seiksuh”).

Just a costume?

Each year after Halloween, controversy erupts over some poor fool’s limited judgment and social consciousness in selecting a racially-charged costume. Consider some recent unfortunate Halloween costume tricks: Six football players from Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., sparked campus-wide controversy and discussion after putting on blackface and body paint in order to portray African tribesmen. At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, four white kids donned blackface to portray the Jamaican bobsledders from the movie “Cool Runnings.” At a Halloween party and government fundraiser in Washington, D.C., hosted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, a guest sported a striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and makeup to darken his skin.

On God’s side

For as long as most of us can remember, the American public has been told that it is exceptionally religious. Unfortunately, this belief has had a huge effect on the way politicians campaign, making it almost mandatory for political candidates to bring up God in one way or another. Karl Rove may be to blame for this. He convinced George Bush that he would need to reach out to Christian evangelicals to get re-elected in 2004 – advice that seems to be responsible for his countless references to his religion and God.

Proofreading the provost

Thanks to Provost Karen Hanson’s e-mail last week, the topic of the smoking ban has seen renewed outrage across campus. I, for one, was enchanted by Hanson’s easygoing attitude toward grammar and sense. Here is her e-mail, with my thoughts italicized: As you may know, Indiana University has made a determination (Has made a determination = has decided. Hire a proofreader, Karen Hanson.) that it will be tobacco-free on all its campuses by January 2008.

Keeping Kruzan

Volunteers recognized the arrival of newly re-elected Mayor Mark Kruzan at the Monroe County Democratic Party headquarters with screaming, clapping and kissing. Kruzan thanked his supporters – “the real Democrats” – Tuesday night before congratulating future city council members and mingling with the crowd.
