Crude humor finds laughs at Buskirk

Chris Pickrell

The Buskirk-Chumley Theater overflowed with people wanting to see the sold-out Comedians of Comedy show, featuring Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn and Doug Benson on Tuesday night. The comedians who had been touring for two weeks visiting various college campuses and cities, closed the tour in Bloomington.\nThe performance was full of crude humor and audience participation, which left the crowd laughing all night long\nOswalt, who was once a regular cast member on the television show “King of Queens” and was the voice of Remy in the summer movie “Ratatouille,” has been a contributor to many other stand-up shows. He opened and closed the show with jokes full of cursing and his life experiences, which left the crowd wanting more. Patton also asked members of the audience what they were studying and questions about Bloomington, then took the information and spun jokes off of it. At the beginning of his performance, Oswalt saw an audience member who was wearing a “Cutters” T-shirt and he asked, “You guys still trying to win that God damn bike race?” \nBenson, a regular contributor to VH1’s “Best Week Ever” and sixth-place contestant on NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” focused on his obsession with marijuana and tailored a few of his jokes to be local. Benson asked for all pot smokers in the audience to yell, which resulted in more than half the audience screaming. He said he believes marijuana should be legalized. \n“When you buy cigarettes, they come in a box and on the side there is warning after warning,” Benson joked. “But when you buy marijuana, there’s no warning. It comes in a plastic bag.” \nThe audience cheered as Benson continued to talk about weed.\nBenson also commented that he doesn’t like when religions are pushed onto others. \n“One day, I was in a convenience store and when I left I was inconvenienced. A man approached me in the parking lot and said, ‘Are you going to hell?’ and I said ‘No. Are you? Do you want a ride? Hell is on my way actually. I’m going right through Martinsville.’”\nThe comedians also had a good time. \n“Bloomington was my favorite part about the tour, but then again I smoke a lot of marijuana, so I could just not remember,” Benson said. \nPosehn currently appears on “The Sarah Silverman Show.”\n“I brought wiener and fart jokes,” Posehn said when he came out onto the stage. He stayed true to his word. He joked about past experiences involving phallic humor and bodily functions, most of which involved his wife. The audience enjoyed his crude and dry sense of humor.\nSeniors Todd Berman and Vanessa Wells could not control their laughter throughout the show. \n“They had a lot of new material and great interaction with the audience,” Berman said. \nWells agreed and said she was happy that she bought a ticket.\n“It was awesome,” Wells said. “I was mad it (cost) $17 at first, but it was well worth it.”
